Deutsche Telekom CEO Rene Obermann confirmed today that T-Mobile USA will be launching Apple products in 2013 which presumably means that the T-Mobile iPhone and quite possibly, the T-Mobile iPad will both become a reality next year.
According to Sacha Segan from PCMag, Obermann made the remarks at investor’s day meetings today saying that T-Mobile USA has reached an agreement to launch Apple products next year. Obermann did not specific which devices T-Mobile USA would launch in 2013 though given that it will be running a 4G LTE network at some point during the year, the iPhone and iPad are likely candidates.
The company also made the news official in a press release. saying that “T-Mobile USA has entered into an agreement with Apple to bring products to market together in 2013.”
Customers on T-Mobile have long had to unofficially run the iPhone on the Magenta carrier’s network as the fourth-largest carrier in the United States has yet to offer the device officially. Unofficially, the device has operated on T-Mobile’s network for a several years and that trend has continued with the iPhone 5 which is able to run on T-Mobile’s network provided users use the right Nano SIM card.
There have been many reports suggesting that a T-Mobile iPhone launch was incoming but up until today, those reports proved fruitless. Now it seems that T-Mobile is making a big move to catch up with AT&T, Sprint and Verizon, all of which offer the iPhone 5 and have offered the iPhone for several years now.
If T-Mobile does launch the iPhone 5 or the iPad fourth-generation, they will more than likely run on its 4G LTE network which is set to debut at some point in 2013. Currently, T-Mobile only has a HSPA+ 42 network in place and it has not yet given a specific date for its 4G LTE roll out.
It’s also possible that T-Mobile will skip the iPhone 5 and wait for the iPhone 5S which would allow for its 4G LTE network to mature prior to the biggest mobile launch it has seen in years.
T-Mobile USA is mum on the specifics of what it will be launching but expect to see its logo plastered on the screen at Apple’s iPhone or iPad launch event sometime next year.
