While there has been a lot of speculation in the U.S. about T-Mobile’s launch of the BlackBerry Bold 9900, the carrier has finally announced the smartphone. The device will be the first 4G BlackBerry smartphone on T-Mobile USA’s AWS network, and the Bold 9900 will be able to tap into the carrier’s 4G HSPA+ network. It is available starting today, August 17th, to business customers and, as rumors have posited, will be available to consumers at retail channels at the end of the month on August 31st. The Bold 9900 on T-Mobile will cost $300 on a two-year contract and there will be a $50 mail in rebate to take the price down to $250.
While the carrier has announced the device, there are still lingering questions from a leaked memo that was floating around and the press release still doesn’t answer questions about NFC support, UMA WiFi calling, or mobile hotspot support. It’s unclear right now if those features will be enabled at launch, will be enabled at a later date via a software update, or won’t be available on the Bold 9900 at all on T-Mobile’s lineup. Considering that the carrier has in the past been pushing UMA WiFi calling on many of its smart devices, it stands a chance that at least that feature will be supported at some time on the flagship BlackBerry phone.
