Tablets Will Be All Paper and Stone Again in 2018

After forecasts of several global catastrophes brought about by war, climate change, pestilence, economic turmoil and essentially mankind’s insistence on being stupid that would leave the world without the capacity to generate electricity or any other source of power except through the use of fire, analysts are now predicting that today’s supposedly burgeoning Tablet market, currently led by Apple, would be reduced once again to consumers (the ones that will be left) using paper and stone to both consume and create content. Since most of the world’s content and data had been converted into digital form prior to the collapse of most systems, this means that the companies that produce paper, graphite, chalk, metal carving tools, and stone carvers will become hot properties for future investment. Colleges will begin ramping up programs to once again train teachers how to teach handwriting. AT&T and Verizon and other carriers are predicted to begin diverting R&D resources into creating large stocks of carrier pigeons.

According to one analyst, “forget the technological downturn, we won’t have most of the information we are all accustomed to having at our fingertips, so we’ll essentially be creating it all from scratch. All of this global sharing will be reduced to small localities so we’re anticipating that there will be many different versions of history as it gets retold and re-chronicled.

Sound far feteched? You betcha and it is all in fun and fantasy. Unlike some of today’s analyst forecasts about the future of the Tablet and mobile markets, which sound equally as far fetched. But I don’t think were meant for fun nor fantasy.

Gartner has come out with a prediction that says Apple will dominate the Tablet sector until 2015. While 2015 doesn’t sound that far away, the way the mobile tech sector on all levels is going it might as well be just shy of the next millennium. Kevin Tofel takes the Gartner report to task and I mostly agree with his five points, although by doing so, in some ways both Kevin and I are just as guilty of the same fruitless speculation that Gartner is engaging in. Sure, it is fun to speculate, and you know what, sometimes you can be pretty accurate if you read the signs correctly.

But, the one thing that we know about the still in its infancy tablet sector is that what looks like a real possibility today can turn into vapor or dashed hopes tomorrow.

Oh, and by the way, if you know of anyone who is taking any of these forecasts from Gartner or anyone else seriously, send them my way. I’ve got some plans I’d like to try and sell them on that include a few pies in the sky.

All of these predictions are guesses based on buying trends and history, and Gartner is an agency that’s been doing these predictions a long time. Do I buy into it? Not necessarily, but I don’t ignore them or blow them off either. After all, even a couple years ago everyone said there was nobody who could beat Apple in the Smartphone market, and yet here we are with Android on top. Years ago nobody expected Microsoft would take off with Windows, and yet 3.0 was released and here we are 20 years later.
