Target Offering Free Credit Monitoring After Credit Card Breach

Published

on

It’s been a stressful few weeks for Target after over 100 million customers had their credit card information stolen from Target’s database during the Black Friday shopping weekend. The retail chain tried to make it up to folks by offering them a measly 10% discount on Target purchases, and now the company wants to try and sweeten the pot.

Target sent out a mass email today offering a free year of credit monitoring powered by Experian’s ProtectMyID, which also provides identify theft insurance. Customers will need to go to creditmonitoring.target.com and register before April 23 in order to receive a unique activation code. From there, the activation codes must be redeemed by April 30.

Target says that “all Target guests who shopped in U.S. stores” are eligible for free credit monitoring, but it looks like anyone can sign up, seeing as how you’ll just need to enter your name and email address to get an activation code.

This seems like a generous offer from Target, but seeing as how most credit card companies offer their own credit monitoring that most folks are already using, we’re not sure if this really is good deal from Target. The retail chain’s measly 10% discount was insincere enough, and we have a hard time believing that people would want to get credit monitoring service from a company whose credit card databases were hacked in the first place.

Target confirmed last month that the breach occurred from November 27 through December 15. Credit and debit card information was taken from the company’s credit card system that includes the credit card number, expiration date, and CVV, as well as PIN numbers for debit cards. Furthermore, Target confirmed that names, mailing addresses, phone numbers and email addresses were also stolen.
