Google Glass is one of my favorite mobile devices, but its short battery life limits how many Glass Explorers use their fancy wearable gadgets. A shirt made by SCOTTEVEST helps solve this problem by concealing a portable battery that can keep Glass powered for a full day.
Like with other gadgets that have sub-par battery life, Glass users either consciously or subconsciously underutilize Glass to conserve juice. Watching YouTube videos, listening to Google Play Music and recording videos are all surefire ways to end up drain its battery. On a good day, the Glass battery will last through lunchtime for me That means I need to take them off to charge Glass at some point in the day or suffer the indignity of wearing a completely useless gadget across my face. Google Glass doesn’t fold like normal glasses and are too big to fit in most pockets.
So what’s the answer to my Google Glass battery problem? The SCOTTEVEST QZip shirt of course. I’ve worn SeV clothing for the better part of a decade to help me lug all of my gadgets around trade shows like CES and on trips around the world. I can stuff some of my SCOTTEVEST vests and jackets with dozens of gadgets, but the QZip shirt is ideal garment for Google Glass explorers.
As you can see in the above video, I’m wearing several SCOTTEVEST garments at CES 2014. Rather than lugging a backpack around, I’m wearing all of my gadgets.
I’ve placed a Mophie Powerstation battery in the QZip’s zippered breast pocket. There’s a small hole in the pocket that I’ve run a micro-USB cable through. The cable then leads up to two loops designed to keep headphone wires in place on either side of the collar. The end of the cable rests below the shirt’s right collar, just a few inches below my ear. When I get a low battery warning on Glass, I simply connect the cable to it and wait for it to charge.
The Google Glass battery is tiny, packing just 570 mAh of power. That means my Mophie Powerstation can recharge Glass up to seven times. Since starting to use this solution I’ve used Glass a lot more. I don’t think twice about taking videos that are several minutes long. I don’t worry about using the Google Play Music subscription I pay $10 per month for.
The QZip has a zipper at the bottom of the seam on its right side. Unzip it and there are two pockets that are big enough to fit a phone, compact camera and the Glass lenses.
At $1,500, Glass is simply too expensive to let go unused for long stretches. The [amazon_link id=”B005OW4BFE” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Mophie Powerstation costs $79[/amazon_link] and the QZip shirt is $45. For less than 10% of the cost of Glass, you can upgrade to a solution that can easily triple how much you use Glass.
