Having released the first version of GTA 5 for the Xbox 360 and PS3 last year, developer Rockstar Games was always going to need a way to lure in owners of Microsoft’s Xbox One and Sony’s PS4 gaming console. Adding first-person shooting mechanics to GTA 5 is one major way the developer hopes to get upgrades and a video out today shows us what GTA 5 for Xbox One and PS4 buyers can expect.
Video game website IGN was among the first to post details about the upcoming first-person mode coming in GTA 5 for the Xbox One and PS4. Rob Nelson is a Animation Director on GTA 5 and, according to his statements to IGN, adding a first-person mode to the Grand Theft Auto universe was something the developer has been toying with for a while. Only with the extra power available in the Xbox One and PS4 was it possible for Rockstar to deliver to players.
“Obviously, we felt like one of the most compelling things you could do to make an experience people have had before feel different was the new first-person mode.”
Casual gamers might have heard first-person mode explicitly used by their friends and family, but chances are that they’ve experienced it. First-person is a reference to camera angles. With a first-person mode players feel like they’re actually the person participating in the game. They don’t see their own face, instead they see the world around them. First person is the closest developers have come to making players feel like they’re really participating in a game.
Call of Duty and Halo are both first-person games. GTA 5, and really almost every Grand Theft Auto game has been a third-person experience. That’s why when you play them you can see the actual person you’re controlling.
You might think that this is a small change, but in a game like GTA 5, it has huge ramifications. Instead of flying a fighter jet and only seeing the jet itself, in GTA 5 for Xbox One and PS4 you see everything from the cockpit. Players aren’t just participating in the game as Michael, Trevor and Franklin. They become Michael, Trevor and Franklin. That the state of San Andreas is so vast and stuffed with things to do makes first-person mode worth experiencing. In short, first-person mode does indeed give Xbox One and PS4 owners an actual reason to rush out and buy a version for those consoles instead of playing on the Xbox 360 and PS3.
Rockstar says they rebuilt all of San Andreas to make it compatible with this new mode. Its added animations for putting on helmets and vehicle interiors too. All of these changed are weaved into the GTA 5 campaign and story. They’re also included in GTA Online, the multiplayer environment that’s included free of charge with every copy of Grand Theft Auto 5. This means that users will be able to play against each other in this mode with no problem. Rockstar has also added controls so that players can switch in-between the different modes. The two modes can also be used in conjunction – taking cover can automatically trigger third-person mode.
Besides first-person mode GTA 5 for the Xbox One and PS4 also includes better drawing distances and more foliage to keep them immersed in the world itself. Rockstar is throwing in-game cash and extra weapons in with the purchase too.
GTA 5 for the Xbox One and PS4 arrives on store shelves and in the Xbox Store and PlayStation Network on November 18th. Unfortunately, Rockstar isn’t giving buyers of the last version of GTA 5 a discount on this version.
