This Phone Blows the iPhone 6 Camera Out of The Water

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are excellent phones, but there’s another new phone that has a far superior camera that photographers should consider before ordering the iPhone 6. Panasonic’s LUMIX Smart Camera DMC-CM1 is a 20-megapixel camera that happens to also be an Andoid phone. in other words, it is much more camera than phone and will simply blow the iPhone 6 camera out of the water.

As you can see in the below video, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-CM1 features a 1″ sensor, full manual controls and a Leica lens. Any one of these items would make it better than the iPhone 6’s camera, but combine all three and it puts this Panasonic device in a class by itself.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-CM1 just might be the first smartphone that can truly replace a high-quality point-and-shoot camera. While smartphone cameras have improved dramatically over the past couple of years, they are limited at capturing some scenes and producing print-quality photos. The large 1″ sensor is the same size as the sensor in the Sony RX100 M3, which is the best pocket camera in the world.  Leica produces some of the most expensive lenses in the world and has trouble keeping them in stock since there are enough people willing to pony up $25,000 or more for them. While the Lumix DMC-CM1 lens won’t be quite the same caliber, it will blow any other smartphone camera lens away.

The smartphone part of the device looks a lot like any other premium Android device. It has a 4.7″ display, 16GB of storage, and  a microSD Card slot for adding up to 128GB of additional storage. It has a big battery that packs 2,600 mAh of juice and a Snapdragon processor. It will ship with Android 4.4 and start selling the device in Germany and France in November.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-CM1 is a niche product, so don’t expect to see it at U.S.  wireless carriers anytime soon. You’ll probably have to pay full price for it off contract. There’s no official pricing for this phone quite yet, but we expect it to cost at least $100 more than standard smartphones like the Galaxy S5 and HTC One M8. We wouldn’t be surprised to see it sell for somewhere around $800.

The DMC-CM1 isn’t for everyone, but it just might be the device to buy for those who want to finally ditch dedicated point-and-shoot cameras and carry a single device everywhere they go.
