Apple’s iPad Air 2 is one of the best full sized tablets on the market and a slate that consumers in the hunt should be looking at. That said, there are some top notch iPad Air 2 competitors that we think you need to rule out before buying Apple’s brand new iPad Air. Here, we take a look at the devices we think represent the top five iPad Air 2 alternatives for the month of December, 2014.

In October, Apple predictably refreshed its iPad lineup with two brand new tablets including an iPad mini 3 (third-gen) and a second-generation version of its larger 9.7-inch iPad Air. The new iPad Air sports an improved design including a thinner frame and a Touch ID fingerprint sensor embedded inside of the home button. It also comes with a better performance and a new gold color.

The iPad Air 2 is quite an investment, the base model runs $499, but consumers know that they’ll be getting one of, if not the best tablet that money can buy. We’ve spent a ton of time with the iPad Air 2 and we can say, without question, that it deserves a spot on your shopping list during the month of December. There are, however, some devices that we think you need to look at before buying Apple’s new tablet.

If you have you eyes on Apple's full sized iPad Air but don't want to pay $500 or more, have a look at last year's version of the iPad that's $100 less and extremely powerful.

The first-gen iPad Air may not come with Touch ID, a gold color, the improved design, or the performance enhancements but it's still a fantastic package and one that's going to be perfectly fine for most people. And best of all, it won't set you back more than $500 during the holidays.

Apple's iPad Air isn't going anywhere. iOS 8 served as its first major iOS update and there's a good chance that this device will continue to get updates for three years making it a sound investment at a year in. If you don't want to break the bank and you want the full-sized iPad, take a look at last year's model.
