During Ubisoft’s quarterly earnings call CEO Yves Guillemot claimed that pre-orders for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles already double the number of console pre-orders seen last generation.
According to IGN, Guillemot cited unspecified retailers, saying they’ve handled double the number of pre-orders for the next generation of consoles. “At the moment they are really getting more pre-orders than what they saw before,” he said.
Amazon and GameStop, two of the biggest video game retailers, recently halted pre-orders for the launch day editions of both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, which could back up Guillemot’s comment. Several stores such as Best Buy, Target and Walmart still offer pre-orders for the consoles, meaning pre-orders aren’t completely sold out yet.
The Ubisoft CEO sounds optimistic about the new consoles from Microsoft and Sony, though he isn’t as high on the Wii U. During earnings call Ubisoft said that Wii U game sales only account for 3 percent of its overall game sales. So far the console has barely made a dent in the company’s sales figures.
Before the earnings call Yves Guillemot said that Zombie U, Ubisoft’s launch title for the Wii U that’s largely considered one of the best Wii U games so far, was nowhere near profitable for the company. Nintendo simply hasn’t sold enough consoles for Ubisoft, which is also why the company delayed Rayman Legends for the Wii U, opting to launch the once-exclusive game as a multiplatform game on the WIi U and current generation consoles later this year.
It seems that Guillemot and his company have high hopes for the next generation of consoles. The company will support the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One with titles like Watch Dogs, Assassin’s Creed IV, The Crew and The Division. Presumably the company expects those next-generation games to sell better than its Wii U titles.
