Logitech and Ultimate Ears announced a new waterproof Bluetooth speaker with 20 hour battery life at CES 2015. This new UE MEGABOOM is a massive speaker that is still portable at about the size of a tall coffee thermos, and it could pump out a lot of volume in the busy and noisy CES event where we went ears and hands on with the device.
Like the smaller UE speakers, there are several interesting features in this new speaker, that users will find handy. First off, the UE MEGABOOM delivers 360-degree sound, so you aren’t just entertaining half of the room. Set it up in the center of the room, pair a phone and let it go.
There is a stain resistant acoustic skin around the exterior of this speaker that feels nice and is easy to grip. This speaker is waterproof up to 1 meter for 30 minutes, even with the nice speaker grill feel. If you quickly recover it from a drop in the pool or plan to use it in the shower it will survive just fine. There is a small slip at the top that can connect to a handle.
The UE MEGABOOM sounds impressive both in the noisy environment of a ball room and in a quieter meeting room. There is a significant amount of bass in a relatively small package. The speaker weighs about 2 pounds and you can connect the MEGABOOM to another UE MEGABOOM or to a UE BOOM to add to the sound.
Control the UE MEGABOOM from up to 100 feet away over Bluetooth. The MEGABOOM features a 20 hour battery life and charges over Micro USB. The included charger can recharge the speaker in two and a half hours and you can see how much battery life is left by pressing the power and volume buttons.
You can choose from a customizable EQ and even set the speaker to wake you up with your playlists, Spotify music and Pandora. The UE MEGABOOM is $299 and launches in January 2015.
