Uncharted 4 Release Date Delayed

Video game developer Naughty Dog and Sony have bad news for those excited about the Uncharted 4 release date. Officially, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is being delayed again. This time it isn’t so its developer can keep working on it though.

Sony announced that the Uncharted 4 release date would be later than expected late yesterday in a post on the PlayStation Blog. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is another chapter in the epic adventure saga starring Nathan Drake. It’s exclusive to Sony’s PS4 console, acting as a main attraction for anyone still using their PS3 or considering an Xbox One purchase. The game was planned for release last fall, but needed to be delayed to give Naughty Dog more time to perfect it.

Shawn Layden of Sony Computer Entertainment America confirms in a post this week that the new Uncharted 4 release date is May 10th. He also says that the game isn’t being delayed because there are bugs or needed polishing. Instead, it seems the problem is that Sony wants to get the game into everyone’s hands on launch day.

“In an effort to meet the considerable worldwide demand, and to ensure that all gamers worldwide have the opportunity to play the game on day one, we have chosen to postpone the launch of the game by two weeks to allow for extra manufacturing time,” Layden says.

Strictly speaking, nothing about the game itself is changing. Sony just wants more time to create and deliver physical copies of the game to retailers world-wide. That makes sense, digital games are continuing to grow, but buying a disc in a store is how the overwhelming majority of console gamers get new titles, most believe. It seems that Sony must-have underestimated demand for the game and printed too little discs. Layden does say that Uncharted 4 isn’t done yet, but will be “later this month.”

The original Uncharted 4 release date was April 26th.

In a separate post on the PlayStation Blog last week Sony teased Uncharted 4’s brand new story. The trailer, which is now available to watch on YouTube, teases how high the stakes are for Nathan Drake in this next chapter of the Uncharted series. For years, Nathan and brother Sam Drake have gone around the world in search of treasures and adventure. Nathan left the life of a treasure hunter behind, but Sam needs him and his expertise for one last mission to find a pirate’s huge treasure.

To be clear, the video does contain snippets of the final game’s narrative. Those who want to go into Uncharted 4 without knowing anything about what’s going to happen should skip the video entirely.

The Uncharted 4 release date is delayed, but it doesn’t seem as if that delay is having any effect on the accessories that players can pre-order. Video game retailer GameStop still shows the April 26th release date for most items related to the game. The Uncharted 4 DualShock Controller and Gold Wireless Headset still show the same release date. The different versions of the game are still showing the April release date too, but that’s likely to change very, very soon.
