Verizon Galaxy S4 Pre-Orders Start, $199 After Rebate

The Verizon Galaxy S4 pre-order started early this morning offering Verizon customers a chance to save a place in line for the sensor and software laden Galaxy S4.

Verizon is the last major U.S. carrier to put the Galaxy S4 on sale for pre-order and it will be the last to bring it to market. The Verizon Galaxy S4 ship date is set for “by May 30th”. This gives hope of some early shipping, something we’ve seen on AT&T, but Verizon customers can still expect a long wait.

The Verizon Galaxy S4 pre-orders are now live with a $249 up front price and a $50 mail in rebate. This is $50 more expensive up front than AT&T, but on par with Sprint. Samsung is clearly pushing carriers to price the Galaxy S4 as a premium device, even if that means asking shoppers to pay more than the iPhone 5 and HTC One.

For Verizon Galaxy S3 owners upgrading mid-contract the Samsung Galaxy S4 on Verizon will cost $649, the same as a 16GB iPhone 5. This means Verizon is simply offering a smaller subsidy for the device up front.

During the Verizon Galaxy S4 pre-order users have the option of purchasing the smartphone in white or black and can pick an accessory bundle with a case, screen protector and charger for $50 more. Most users can pick up these accessories cheaper elsewhere or find better quality cases and protectors.

New Verizon customers will need to pick a Share Everything data plan for the Galaxy S4 or opt for a hidden $70 a month Galaxy S4 plan. Users looking to keep unlimited data will need to pay full price for the Galaxy S4.

Verizon offers a $6.99 a month warranty and insurance that covers loss and theft as well as accidental damage. Insurance industry data estimates that 1 in 8 Samsung Galaxy S4 devices will break in the first six months due to accidental damage. Users can also pick up a warranty, that doesn’t cover loss or theft, for a one time fee of $99.99 through SquareTrade. There is a $50 to $99 deductible for each of these plans.

Best Buy is also taking pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy S4, for users who want to get RewardZone points. The price is listed at $249 currently, with no mention of a mail in rebate.

The Verizon Galaxy S4 features a 5-inch 1080P HD display and a multitude of sensors that allow users to control the smartphone through motion, eye-tracking and gestures. The plastic design may not compare to the HTC One’s all metal exterior, but Samsung lets users pop in a spare battery and a Micro SD card for additional storage.
