The iOS 9.3 update adds in iCloud encryption that is connected to your iPhone passcode. Although the timing of this comes right as Apple is fighting with the FBI over the encyption on an iPhone, this has likely been in the works for some time. If you have two factor authentication turned on with your Apple ID, Apple will encrypt your iCloud data using the passcode you use on your iPhone.
