There are more iPad Air 2 colors to choose from thanks to a new gold iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 in Apple’s lineup. We’ve already heard from readers asking us, “Which iPad Air 2 color should I buy?”
One of the big questions is if the new gold iPad Air 2 color is worth buying especially when it is a brand new option. Here’s a look at the new iPad Air 2 colors and advice to help you pick the right iPad Air 2 color or iPad mini 3 color.
The iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 are available in three colors; gold, space gray and silver. These are the same as the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 color options, which may simplify which iPad Air 2 color to buy if you want to match devices.
You can’t go look at a gold iPad Air 2 or gold iPad mini 3 yet, but it is the same color and overall look as the iPhone 6 or iPhone 5s so you can get a good idea of what it looks like. The gold iPhone 6 Plus offers the best overall idea of what the gold iPads look like in person.
The iPad Air 2 is thinner than ever but the overall design is pretty similar to the current iPad Air. The iPad mini 3 looks the same as the iPad mini 2, with Touch ID added to both. The Touch ID ring matches the main color on the iPad mini 3 and iPad Air 2.
Even though there are three iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 colors there are only two iPad colors for the front of these devices — black and white. The silver and gold iPad Air 2 color options include a white front and the space gray a black front.
iPad Air 2 Colors Entertainment & Style
The iPad Air 2 is a popular device for watching movies and TV, which makes the space gray iPad Air 2 a great option for many users. The front of this iPad is black, just like the edges of your HDTV. You don’t see many white TVs because the black bezels deliver a more pleasing viewing experience to frame a movie. After using a silver iPad Air with white bezels for a year it’s not a major distraction, but it takes a little getting used to.
The gold iPad Air 2 is flashy. If you need something a little more understated that will look great with anything you are carrying the silver iPad Air 2 is a safer style choice. There is not as much accessorizing with the iPad Air 2 or iPad mini 3 as with a device like the iPhone 6, but it is something to consider.
iPad Air 2 Color Options
You can see the iPad Air 2 color options and iPad mini 3 color options in the gallery below to see how they compare to each other. There is no difference between the color options for the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3.
iPad Air 2 Color Scratches
Scratches were a problem with some early Apple colors, but the iPad Air and iPad mini 2 survived well in space gray and silver without the scratches that plagued the black iPhone 5.
After using the silver iPad Air and space gray iPad mini 2 for a year they both look like new even with a fair amount of out of the case use. The lightning connection area is not scratched up like the silver iPhone 5s did after a year of use, potentially due to fewer charging cycles.
The gold iPad Air 2 color is new, so it’s tough to tell exactly how it will hold up, but there are not widespread reports of the gold iPhone scratching which is a good sign.
iPad Air 2 Color Fading & Wear
You may worry about the silver and gold iPhone 6 finish fading over time or be worried that the white bezels will tarnish and fade to an ugly yellowish white. These are not problems we see with either of the iPhone colors or with the white bezels on the iPad Air.
You do need to be concerned about the build up of sweat or humidity and dust between a case and the back of the iPad Air 2. On lighter color options you may see a weird discoloration if moisture or dirt sits between the two. The best way to deal with this is to regularly take it out of the case and wipe it off, no matter what color you choose.
The space gray iPad Air 2 color and iPad mini 3 color will show fingerprints more. This is on the front bezel and on the back of the device. If you cannot stand fingerprints you may want to avoid the space gray iPad Air 2 color option.
iPad Air 2 Cases
If you plan to buy an iPad Air 2 case you should also consider what color you want and how it will look with the iPad Air 2 color you buy. Apple sells the iPad Air 2 smart cover in seven colors. This leaves the back of the iPad visible, so the iPad Air 2 color really matters. The iPad Air 2 smart case covers the back and is available in five color options. Check out some of the iPad Air 2 case color options in gallery below.
