Windows Phone 8 will upgrade to the next version of Windows Phone, whatever that is, according to a PCMag report.
At Mobile World Congress Greg Sullivan, a senior marketing manager at Microsoft, told PCMag that Microsoft will have an upgrade path for current Windows Phone 8 devices. That means the next version of Windows Phone won’t leave Windows Phone 8 users stuck in the past.
When Microsoft launched Windows Phone 8, it broke the bad news to Windows Phone 7 users that they wouldn’t get an upgrade to the new OS. That’s because Microsoft changed to kernel of Windows Phone to the same one used in Windows 8 and Windows RT. There was no way to upgrade older phones to the new code base.
The next version of Windows Phone is likely “Windows Phone Blue.” Like Windows Blue, Windows Phone Blue is part of a new strategy at Microsoft. Under the “Blue” strategy Microsoft will upgrade its desktop and mobile operating systems every year, putting them on a track similar to Apple’s iOS and OS X.
That doesn’t mean the next version of Windows Phone will arrive before the next wave of Windows Phones do, however. During the interview Sullivan said “over the course of the next several months, I wouldn’t be surprised to see some exciting new devices and more interoperability before we start talking about what [operating system] is next.”
Sullivan said that unlike Windows Phone 7, Windows Phone 8 is flexible enough for manufacturers to release phones with new hardware components before the next major update. Windows Phone 7 only supported certain components which made the first phones outdated very shortly after they came to market.
The platform apparently isn’t flexible enough for a Windows Phone phablet which HTC cancelled at some point because Windows Phone 8 didn’t support the components it used.
