The PS4 launched to the public today, but Microsoft is attempting to steal some of that thunder by announcing that the Xbox 360 is back on top as the best-selling console in the US for the month of October. The console was kicked from the podium by the PS3 after sitting atop the market for almost two and a half years. However, it’s back on top.
This may be the last month that the Xbox 360 sees the number one spot, as November will most definitely see either the Xbox One or the PS4 on top of the best-seller list, but the Xbox 360 certainly had an amazing run while it lasted. Microsoft announced last month that it crossed the 80 million unit mark with the Xbox 360, beating the PS3 to the punch when Sony announced the same thing a couple weeks afterward.
As for specific figures for the month of October, total retail spend on the Xbox 360 platform for the month, which includes hardware, software and accessories, reached $283 million. The console also held five of the top 10 console game titles for October, including Batman: Arkham Origins, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Battlefield 4, NBA 2K14 and Grand Theft Auto V.
Before the PS3 broke the Xbox 360’s streak, Microsoft’s console had been the best-selling system in the US for 32 months straight, starting back in January 2011. However, as the next-generation consoles are just around the corner, current-generation console sales are rapidly decreasing, but it seems as though the GTA 5 PS3 bundle was just too good to pass up for a lot of gamers, who took advantage of the deal without much hesitation.
This will likely be the last month that we’ll see the Xbox 360 or the PS3 on top of the charts, and the next-gen console will take over. As for which new system will be the first to the top for November is hard to guess, but the PS4 will be on sale a week longer than the Xbox One, so perhaps the PS4 will be the first to the top for the month of November.
However, while the last-gen consoles will most likely be pushed aside on the best-selling charts, don’t expect them to disappear completely. Both Sony and Microsoft have pledged to keep the consoles around, confirming that new games would come to the PS4 and Xbox 360 longer after the next-gen consoles have been out on the market, which is definitely a sigh of relief to those frugal gamers out there.
