Microsoft announced today that it delayed the Xbox One launch in some markets into 2014 and that only 13 markets out of the original 21 will be getting the Xbox One when its released in November.
Originally, Microsoft promised that the Xbox One would launch in 21 countries around the world. However, thanks to widespread demand for the next-generation console, the company has announced that it will be delaying the Xbox One launch in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland until 2014.
The company cites demand and the ability to ensure that its “customers get the best Xbox One experience the first day it is available” as reasons for the delay. Microsoft states that the delay will not affect 13 of the other original markets, meaning, buyers in Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Spain, United Kingdom, United States and New Zealand will see the Xbox One arrive at some point in November.
Microsoft previously announced that the Xbox One would hit Japan at some point in 2014. The company does not state when it will get the Xbox One out to these regions next year only that it will be working as hard as possible to fulfill demand “as soon as possible.”
Those are may have already pre-ordered the device are being told to contact the retailer where they placed the pre-order in order to get questions answered. Microsoft also says that those who have “already preordered an Xbox One Day One system before today in those countries, you will also receive a pack-in game with your console when it launches.”
This is obviously a huge blow to consumers in the countries affected by the delay but it’s clear that Microsoft has supply issues on its hands and that it needed to make a calculated decision in regards to its roll out plans.
Microsoft’s Xbox One will replace the current Xbox console, the Xbox 360, as the company’s flagship. The device is in close competition with Sony’s PlayStation 4 which is expected to be released in a host of countries around the same time as the Xbox One.
