Shortly after launching on the Android platform, Xbox SmartGlass for iPhone and iPad has arrived on Apple’s App Store awaiting those who use Microsoft’s Xbox Live service.
After a bit of a wait, iPhone and iPad owners can now access Xbox SmartGlass which turns the iPhone, iPad or iPod touch into a second screen for the Xbox 360 video game console. The app is free for iPhone and iPad owners, just like it was for Android and Windows users, but it requires an Xbox Live membership for it to work.
Xbox SmartGlass can control the Xbox 360 directly from the iPhone or the iPad. The app puts virtual controls on the devices to navigate the Start screen on the console, and will also act as a keyboard which makes it easier to type out messages or search for content through the Xbox.
SmartGlass also turns the iPhone or iPad into a second screen for games and apps on the Xbox 360. The application will allow users to display more information about a movie or TV show and it will also allow iOS device owners todisplay stats in a sports game, or even act as a way for users to control certain aspects of games. Games that are compatible with the application include Halo Waypoint and Dance Central 3.
In Dance Central 3, users can queue up songs using an iPhone or iPad which makes for a seamless, uninterrupted experience while playing the game.
Other features of Xbox Smartglass for iPhone and iPad include:
• Use your phone’s keyboard to type to your Xbox 360
• Browse the Internet on your Xbox 360 with full keyboard and zooming
• Play, pause, fast forward, rewind, and stop videos and music on your Xbox 360
• Search the full Xbox catalog of music, video, and games
• Enjoy rich, interactive experiences from select game and entertainment content creators
• Track and compare your achievements with your Xbox friends
• Change up your 3D avatar
• Message your Xbox friends
• Edit your Xbox profile
Needless to say, it’s worth downloading for those that are using an Xbox 360 as their main video game console or content consumer. The application requires iOS 5.0 or later to run so those that haven’t already made the upgrade will have to in order to use Xbox Smartglass.
