Microsoft Unveils New Inking Features in Windows 7 Release Candidate

Surprising many analysts and enthusiasts, Microsoft today showed off new Inking features that will be available in Windows 7. According to a spokesman:

In addition to the exciting Touch and Multi-Touch features that have been at the core of Windows 7 to this point, we are also providing substantial improvements to Tablet PCs that take advantage of stylus input and digital inking. Ink will now be a key component throughout the operating system allowing users to take digital notes in any application. We’ve built upon and improved the handwriting recognition systems to a point where it is completely transparent to the user. Making corrections will be a thing of the past. We have also improved upon the search capabilities for those who choose to leave their notes and annotations in Ink to a point where even pig Latin will return a correct result.  Navigation with a stylus is easier than ever and we believe we’ll see many OEM partners taking advantage of these new features. Any computer with a digitizer should be able to work with these new features. We do not anticipate this working with Netbooks, unless Asus releases a new Eee model that can take advantage of these special features.

The new Inking features will be released in a separate SKU that will be called Windows 7 Ink and will cost $35 more than any other Windows 7 edition.

Damn… although I lament the Vista days when they didn’t have an additional Tablet SKU I’m totally down for this if it isn’t just marketing speak.
