Published

on

According to Liliputing, the Asus Eee Slate EP121, which debuted earlier this year at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, is now shipping from Amazon.com, but is currently listed as out of stock.

The 12-inch Windows tablet comes in either a 32 GB SSD configuration for $999 or a 64 GB SSD configuration for $1,099. The 2.6-pound device comes with a Bluetooth keyboard and a carrying case and should be good for about two to four hours of computing time. The device also includes a digitizer.

That looks cool – one of the “first” inking tablets, with the stylus (and Windows 7) it’s probably a lot more useful to business and education, but what’s Windows 7 like to use for touch? Comapred to the iPad the price is a little bit on the large side. Is it powerful enough to use as one’s main laptop? Seperate keyboard is a bit awkward, a hybrid along the lines of the TC1100 would be more practical.

I will never understand why people complain about Windows 7 and touch. Is it as idiot-proof as the block-grid layout of the iPad? No, I reckon not, but resize the DPI to 125% and stretch out the SIP to your liking, and it works amazingly well.

I’ve had my HP Slate for 3 weeks now, and I really like it. My only real gripe is that I wish it had a little more oomph to it. The Eee Slate seems more like the power-house I’d appreciate.

I originally ordered the HP and I waited for almost 3 months before I canceled the order and jumped to the ASUS EP121… All I have to say is GREAT CHOICE!!! This is MUCH more powerful than the HP SLATE. I completely replicated my laptop on this slate and it actually runs faster and more efficient…..

I have recieved my EP121 from amazon. I ordered on the 6th of January.
“Should get about 2 hours” is nuts. I am getting 4+ hours. I’m not sure yet how to drain it in under 3.

Nice! Can you tell us a bit about how you are using it? I’m assuming wifi is being used for the full 4+ hours? Are you running any CPU intensive applications?

I’m ordering one next week and I’m really just looking for 2.5 hours or so away from my desk. If I can get that while using Photoshop, Zbrush and browsing with Chrome then I’ll be a very happy guy.

Oh, and to the first commentor regarding price compared to an ipad:

It’s an i5, 4gb RAM, 64gb SSHD, 12″ screen with gorilla glass with an outdoor usable display the blows the ipad away.
The including ports (that you have to pay extra for on an ipad), keyboard and included case would run you $200 dollars to add to the ipad. And this is suggesting that they even perform remotely the same.

Price out an ipad with a 64gb drive + accessories and then compare the remaining features.

I also have an HP Slate which replaced an Asus T91MT which replaced an OQO 02 which replaced a Motion m1300 so you understand I like Windows tablets. What strikes me about the EP121 is the “12”. To my mind, something that big and that heavy is competing with convertibles like the Lenovo X201 Tablet, not with portable tablets. If I’m going that big, I’d rather have the additional power, bigger battery, and attached keyboard of the Lenovo. I’d much rather sacrifice the power to get a tablet like the HP Slate that’s a pound lighter. I wish Asus had ditched the keyboard and upgraded the screen and CPU of the T91MT to create their tablet offering.

It isn’t that heavy. I weighs the same as my T101MT.
