Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Actually Thicker Than iPad 2?

Published

This week at CTIA 2011 in Florida, Samsung announced two new tablet devices of the Galaxy Tab variety dubbed the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9. The numbers of course refer to the size of the screen.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

Speaking of size, Fritz Nelson of InformationWeek posted a round-up of the event and in it, there was some pretty interesting information regarding Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1.

Samsung, in February at the Mobile World Congress, announced the Galaxy Tab 10.1.You may recall, that a couple of weeks later, Apple launched a little product called the iPad 2, a device that boasted a design that was a mere 8.8mm thick, thinner than Samsung’s device.

Samsung went back to the drawing board and announced the thinner version of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 at CTIA which the company says measures in at 8.6mm in thickness, thinner than Apple’s iPad 2. Because of this turn of events, the demo units that Samsung had on the floor for CTIA were not the new Galaxy Tab 10.1 but the original, bulkier version, now called the Samsung Galaxy 10.1V. The newer units were in glass cases, out of the reach of mere mortals.

iPad 2 and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1Well, Fritz Nelson is apparently not a mortal as he was able to score some time with the elusive Galaxy Tab 10.1 and in doing so, snapped a couple of telling photos. Whatever it was in that glass case, whether it was the real deal or just a prototype, was actually thicker than the iPad 2.

The Samsung rep was apparently at a loss for words when presented with the evidence.

His response?

It’s 8.6mm.

Perhaps device manufacturers, known for measuring battery life in the most beneficial matter, have come up with a new measuring system for thickness as well.

Hm… Given that the iPad2 is 8.8mm and the apparent additional thickness of the Tab 10.1, I’d guess it’s 2mm thicker on that photo. Make it 2.1mm more and you have the thickness of the Tab 10.1v aka the thick old version.

Perhaps Fritz Nelson remains a mortal. ;)

But nonetheless “uh, uh, but our tablet is thinner” is not really an argument for buying this device over another one. Especially when at some point it becomes too thin to hold comfortably (for me the point is above the iPod touch 4G’s 7.2mm at tablet size). And also somewhat absurd, when you put it into some kind of protective back cover…

Yep, almost every iPhone I see is hidden in an awful cheaply looking plastic bumper. Almost every iPad is hidden behind a fat cover. So what’s the use of producing an ultra thin device which breaks as soon as you touch it with your bare hands?

How thick is the bag of $40 dongles I need to buy from apple to do anything with the device once I get where I am going?

You’re going nowhere so you shouldn’t need much help with that Troll.

        Actually that is just it.
I go lots of places and would like to have some flexibility in the product I am using.
Not that there are not good reasons to buy ipad2 – but this insanity of it being a mm thicker or thinner is just that. Insanity.
The lack of integrated standard ports however is an actual concern with actual impact upon how you can use the device.
So I was not intending to troll but simply giving in to my tendency to snarky sarcasm.
I know it is not nice but I do it sometimes anyway and then feel bad about it later.
For instance, your reply leaves the obvious implication that ipad users in general either don’t use the device portably or do not use it to much extent, leaving brand ownership as the major reason for purchase. Or perhaps just the usage of a simpleton.
See – now I’ll feel bad later.

The truth is apple fans would rejoice like mad and be running article after article about all the implications of it if apple did put a small deposit of standard ports on board the ipad in round 3.
But prior to that they generally take the stance that it is not important.

I suppose they learn that from their leader though. The inclusion of anything apple didn’t include being seen as a ‘fail’ until apple invents it themselves in the next round.

Didn’t Samsung have 2 versions of the Galaxy Tabs at CTIA? One was the mechanical prototype with the new thinner body, and the other functioning version in the old thicker body? Which one did Fritz Nelson photograph?

I Will decide for myself how to spend my own money, thank you very much. If I wanted to be told what to buy I could always move to Cuba.

I know… I like GBM; but that is soooo annoying! It’s especially annoying when it used to work just fine on my Pulse app on my iPod Touch 4G.

The Samsung Galaxy is a true competitor to the iPad 2 but the Galaxy may be at a disadvantage because the iPad has become venerable like Microsoft Office. The iPad 2 and other tablets can be obtained online at https://www.digitalundivide.com

I have both devices…the Samsung IS THINNER (not by a lot though), confirmed. Apple also have a history of “Photoshoping” pictures when appearing at the German courthouse, in which they changed the aspect ratio of the Galaxy Tab. Not credible anymore, especially, I do not care about the low res photo in this article. If you want to make up your mind go check it for real. As a user I can tell you that the Galaxy Tab has also a higher resolution (720p), significantly better cameras (IPad2 is a joke for that), stereo speakers (which matters more than I thought) and oh….it plays flash (yeah suck on that…want to watch southpark? ). In addition, you can program your own app for free, put them on the market and…you don’t even have to get a pricey OS for that.

Drawbacks of The Galaxy Tab : it crashes more than the Ipad2. I am honest and I don’t praise devices like a monk.

People telling me that there are billions of apps for the Ipad2? yeah that includes games which entertain your cat (btw if you and your cat are challenged by the same games then you’re pretty much a retard, technically saying) or this spiral keyboard, to “make music”. Give me a billions of these…People like to make some fuzz on how non-apple device suck and stroke themselves with standardized, non-free, low customizable products. Now don’t get me wrong, Apple make great product, but I like to see these competitors who all have decent products.

I would think that a company like Samsung understands metric measurements (contrary to some Journalists who still think the world is all about inches, foot and miles. LoL) and did not screw up. 8.6 mm is thin. But lets see the truth when it gets shipped hopefully in June.

its a prototype that doesn’t turn on. Probably going to be thicker than the final version
