Samsung Plans 2 GHz Dual-Core Smartphone in 2012

With Samsung having just recently announced its own internally-made 1 GHz dual-core Exynos–codenamed Orion–processor, that chipset may soon seem dated given that the company has recently publicly commented that it hopes to release a 2 GHz dual-core smartphone in 2012.

While NVIDIA was the first to market with a 1 GHz dual-core CPU based on the ARM Cortex A9 reference chipset design, various other manufacturers have jumped in on that space and smartphones and tablets will soon be released with dual-core gigahertz chips from Samsung, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, and others.

To differentiate itself and expand its competitive lead in the Android smartphone space, Samsung may look internally for its 2 GHz dual-core CPU. According to Yahoo news, the company’s ambitious plan is to ready a smartphone with that chip by next year:

“We are planning to release a 2Ghz dual core CPU-equipped smartphone by next year. This product will have the data processing capacities of a regular PC,” said a high-ranking official from Samsung according to South Korean search engine Daum.

Hopefully, by then, more apps will be able to take advantage of asynchronous dual-core processing. Rather than tap both cores at the same time, asynchronous processing would tap the cores as needed to provide as much processing power as an app or system would require, by down-clock the processing speed when the power isn’t needed to conserve battery life.
