HTC EVO 3D Details, Review & Hands-On Video Roundup

Sprint’s HTC EVO 3D is the true successor of the wildly popular HTC EVO 4G, a device that came out on June 4th of 2010 and still is one of Sprint’s most popular phones.

HTC EVO 3D

While the HTC EVO Shift 4G may have come out at the beginning of 2011 with the EVO name attached to it, the HTC EVO 3D is considered to be the equivalent of the HTC EVO 2. In other words, the EVO 3D is where the real changes occurred.

The handset was originally announced back in March at CTIA with a scheduled release date planned for sometime this summer. Like the name suggests, the device will employ two rear 5MP cameras which will allow for the creation of 3D content and the display will be able to deliver glasses free 3D viewing. It will  join Sprint’s family of WiMax 4G handsets.

HTC EVO 3D Release Date

While the exact release date of the HTC EVO 3D is currently unannounced, Best Buy recently started taking covert pre-orders for the device which could mean that a release is just around the corner.

Sprint and HTC gave the device a summer launch window and a launch at the beginning of June is certainly not out of the question. After all, the HTC EVO 3D’s predecessor, the HTC EVO 4G, came out at the beginning of June.

Update: The HTC EVO 3D is officially launching June 24th.

What is the HTC EVO 3D?

The HTC EVO 3D is a 4G WiMax enabled device and it’s the successor to one of Sprint’s longtime flagship devices, the HTC EVO 4G. It’s going to come with a 4.3-inch qHD display – same size as the EVO 4G but with a higher resolution – and the display will be able to handle glasses-free 3D content.

HTC EVO 3D

As for the processor, the EVO 3D takes a big leap from the processor on the original EVO. The EVO 3D will feature a 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core processor making it Sprint’s first WiMax handset with a dual-core processor.

It will also come with Android 2.3 with the new HTC Sense 3.0 out of the box. Gingerbread, while confirmed for release, has yet to come to the HTC EVO 4G.

HTC EVO 3D Features

HTC Sense 3.0: The HTC EVO 3D will have Android 2.3 Gingerbread on board but over the top of that it will have the new HTC Sense 3.0 which will bring new home screens, new applications and Friend Stream for easy Facebook and Twitter integration.

3D Capabilities: As the EVO 3D’s name suggests, the device will be capable of displaying 3D content. The dual 5MP cameras will also be able to capture 720p 3D video.

Simultaneous Voice and Data Capabilities: While in 3G/4G or Wi-Fi coverage areas, the EVO 3D will allow web surfing while on the phone.

3G/4G Mobile Hotspot Support: Like many of the recent Android devices, the EVO 3D will be able to act like a mobile hotspot and provide data connectivity for up to 8 Wi-Fi enabled devices.

HTC EVO 3D Pricing

Pricing for the HTC EVO 3D is currently an unknown. The pre-order at Best Buy did not come with any sort of official pricing or any clues as to how much the phone will cost. If we had to guess, there is a chance that it could be the usual $199 but it wouldn’t be surprising to see it listed for $250 or a little higher due to the 3D features.

The one thing over anything else i was hoping to see in this article was: Battery Life has been enhanced.

Im sick of being told to adjust the brightness of my phone or “dont run as many apps” why the hell am i paying out my ass for a phone that i cant use properly, 3D, yeah great, will allow you to record 5 mins worth of footage and then it dies.

does anyone have any insight on how the battery life will perform on this new phone.

Other than that, looks like a winner.

    • Chuong Nguyen says

Given that the EVO 4G (WiMax on Sprint) has better battery life than the Thunderbolt on Verizon (LTE), I’d imagine that with 3D off, the EVO 3D would exhibit some of the same behavior as the EVO 4G in terms of battery life. Additionally, if I recall correctly from CTIA, the EVO 3D will ship with a massive 1700 mAh battery, which is more than the 1400 mAh battery on the Thunderbolt or the 1500 mAh battery on the EVO 4G. Right now, they’re still optimizing the software so an accurate estimate of battery life was not given at CTIA.

    • The Dark Lord says

I think the battery life will be much better. I have the Nexus S and I have battery for at least one day. I am a very heavy user, I am on the phone in between 4-6 hours a day and surf, text and stream all day. Android 2.3 has improved battery life a lot I think. I had an EVO and I was disgusted with 3 re-charges a day. Now I do not one. I put my phone on the charger once a day and that is in the evening over night. But not once did I have the yellow or red battery life on so far. It has been almost 5 month now. For me battery life became more important then features like 3D. The Nexus has almost all the features this phone will have and it is brilliant. Sprint will release that phone in a few days. Maybe consider that … or wait until battery reports come out on the EVO 3D. Have fun …

i just returned nexus s and preordered evo 3d my rooted evo gets 20 hrs on wifi and set cpu stops the usage when screen off

    • Shawnte says

Yes!! :) The battery life has been enhances by the type of battery they put in the phone. Since The Evo’s most complained about problem was the battery life, they put some type of battery in the phone that is suppose to tend to that problem drastically. Not exactly sure what the battery is called but you’ll find it if u watch HTC Evo 3d review vidoes on youtube.

There’s no real benefit to me on the EVO 3D… dual-core processors to check my email and surf the web? Uh, why? If you are using it as a gaming platform, sure, I get it, but I don’t. I like my EVO 4G just fine.

    • Yo says

I think the point is its 3D? ,lol i have evo 4g and cannot wait to get this phone on the upgrade!! :D

      • Dj says

He is posting his opinion, which he seems to think is a fact. There are plenty of benifits from the Evo 4g to the Evo 3D. Obviously. It may be useless to him because all he is going to do is check his email and surf the web. Buddy, you can do that on a flip phone XD The HTC phones, especially the Evo’s are for people who appreciate technology, and use it to its fullest. I agree with you Bravo, he shouldn’t even post on what he knows very little about. Theres no point :P

    • TDM says

It’s for new uses entirely – not just gaming, but also has huge potential for augmented reality applications.

    • JosephShaw30 says

Ordered mine today and cant wait till OFFICIAL release date…. People, DO YOUR HOMEWORK… The Evo 4G is a magnificant device by far…, poor battery but magnificant…. Who APPRECIATE great technology!!!

    • ejmd says

Pre-ordered mine a couple hours ago. Can’t wait for the release! i am a previous iPhone owner (3G then 3GS) switching to Android! Now, just to clarify, the reason for the switch isn’t that I dislike the iPhone, it’s that Android is amazing and I have an iPad 2 to satisfy my iOS needs. SUPER excited about the phone. Best Buy staff was a little clueless when I asked them about the pre-order. Less than stellar customer service.

      • Taimursiddiqui96 says

I think it was like that because the offer for pre-order was not public. They would only tell you if you asked about the phkne

The Evo 3D is going to the leader in the smart phone
industry, with the 4G speeds, dual core processor, and 3D camera this phone
will be epic. Paired with my employee Sling receiver from DISH Network,
the Evo 3D will be the perfect mobile device. With Sling receiver, I can stream
live and recorded TV to my phone wherever I have 3G coverage or WiFi.

  4. DS007 says

I called Sprint to check on my Silver status. Asking about my plan and my status, and am I entitled to an upgrade after 1 year. While going back-n-forth the lady said to me, well the good thing is “you will get an automatic rebate the first week of june, rather than a mail in rebate. I had already told her my intention of getting the 3D. So I think she slipped up by saying that there will be an aotomatic rebate in the first week of june.On other sites I have seen people report, May 24th, on another 25th. I think to be loyal to there first day 4g customers Sprint should wait until the first of june.

  5. You know I'm right says

This phone (I’m sorry iPhone fans) will be UNO 1. About the battery life. They upped the battery to 1750. About double the life as the evo 4g. Along with double 5 megapixel cameras that will take 3d and record in 3d, and duel core with android 2.3 sense. Please look up this Wonderful phone on sprint and tell me what the iPhone has or will have that this won’t. Absolutely nothing. There isn’t going to be an iPhone 5 retina 3d. In dreams and it still wouldn’t top this phone.

    • Kent Shane says

Sorry mistake “what the iPhone will have that this phone won’t” my iPod won’t fix mistakes as well as an evo.

  6. btkgator says

First, great page! Thanks for the compilation. Second, I have been checking the web multiple times a day to get some clue on to the actual launch date with no luck. I’m still carrying the BB 8330. It’s brutal. I need this phone! Everyone except for Sprint is saying beginning of June…Sprint is saying Summer and that could still mean several months down the road. Any real info on this?

    • btkgator says

Went to a Sprint store yesterday.  When I asked about the Evo 3D he said the standard answer of this Summer.  I explained that Summer could be into Sept and if it was going to be that long I was going to pick up the Nexus S.  He said why don’t I wait for June…I tried to probe if that meant he knew it was coming in June but he just repeated that I should wait until June.  This phone looks far superior to the Nexus S and really any other phone out.

    • carl says

I went to the Sprint store today. They told me that they will have them in the store on Friday. I was put on a waiting list in case their supply ran out. They weren’t sure how many they would get.

  7. EJ says

Bad news, I harassed and harassed a Sprint employee (nicely) and he stated that the release date was in July after I politely asked him to clarify what “early summer” really meant. I really hope he’s misleading me as I am dying for this phone to come out early June or ASAP! Geez!

  8. Escape2mars says

android calendars are lousy.  cannot copy paste like winmo does.  hopefully the evo 3d will have HID bluetooth.  funny how so few comment on this.

  9. Hisbookgarden says

Educated guess ax to the release date will be June 5th. Here’s why: the current promotion of the instant rebate has been extended to June 4th. It had originally been scheduled to end on May 7th, the day before the nexus s was released. Last year the EVO 4G wad released on June 4th. I don’t think these are mere coincidences.

  10. btkgator says

Ok, I went by the Sprint store again today and they did start taking pre-orders.  $50 gift card, the same as Best Buy and Radio Shack.  I went ahead and purchased 2, one for myself and one for my wife.  Still no hints from the Sprint employee on dates or price other than he said it shouldn’t be out past July and it shouldn’t cost more than $300.  Please let me know if anyone else hears a firm date or price.

  11. Don't trust AT&T anymore says

So I’m giving up on AT&T after getting hardly any sugnals all weekend, and this was after waiting for several months for them to finally do some type of a 4g network.  I’m going back to Sprint even if I have to pay the early term payment. The EVO 3d is icing on the cake for me

  12. Nothanksjust says

At this time the phone has a locked bootloader.  =(

The Price seems set at $199 (with contract) and is expected to be available June 4.
