Android Gingerbread on the Rise, But Key Devices Are Still Lacking

Google has posted its latest Android chart showing the distribution of the different versions of the operating system. The results indicate that Gingerbread has doubled in size over the past two weeks while Froyo, unsurprisingly has dropped in stature.

Android Distribution

As you can see in the graph, the percentage of devices using Froyo is down to 59.4% which is a drop from the 64.6% that it was at just two weeks ago. And while Froyo dropped, Android Gingerbread saw a huge increase and has doubled up to 18.6% distribution.

And while it’s nice that Google has told us that there are twice as many devices running Gingerbread as there were two weeks ago, the numbers fail to tell the real story about what’s going on here with Android Gingerbread.

That increase 18.6%? Yeah, it not only includes the broken Droid X Gingerbread update but also new phones that were released with Gingerbread on board, phones like the HTC EVO 3D.

So, yes, Gingerbread is on the rise, but it’s because manufacturers and carriers are continuing to release phones with the latest software and not because it’s actually appearing on older models and phones that actually need the update like the HTC ThunderBolt and the T-Mobile G2x.

This is the dark side of Android and one of the reasons why I continue to keep the iPhone 5 as an option even though I absolutely love the upcoming Motorola Droid Bionic.

  1. The Droid X2 was not released with Gingerbread, and it is still on version 2.2.
