Verizon: Unlimited 3G Customers Can Keep Unlimited When Upgrading to 4G LTE Data Plans

After Verizon Wireless had recently stopped offering unlimited data plans in favor of a tiered metered pricing structure, there was confusion if customers who switch between a 3G and 4G smartphone can keep their unlimited status when doing so.

According to a Twitter message from the official Verizon Wireless Support user account, the carrier has confirmed that customers on an unlimited 3G data plan–those who are grandfathered in before the carrier had changed to the new metered plans on July 7th–can continue to keep their unlimited plan status whenever they opt to upgrade to a 4G LTE smartphone, which would require users to switch from a 3G data plan to a 4G data plan.

Additionally, the carrier also continued the Twitter message stating that customers who are now on an unlimited 3G data plan can also add a $30 unlimited mobile hotspot package for unlimited tethering once they switch to a 4G plan. In order to add the unlimited mobile hotspot consumers need to call Verizon, as there is no online option to add the mobile hotspot to unlimited data plans. In fact, changing your data plan online could cost you your unlimited data.

Currently Verizon offers three 4G LTE smartphones, the HTC ThunderBolt, Samsung Droid Charge and LG Revolution. These devices offer incredible upload and download speeds, faster than your home internet connection in many cases. The best 4G LTE smartphone is on the way in the form of the Motorola Droid Bionic, which is expected to arrive as early as August. This 4G LTE Android smartphone has impressive specs and plenty of reasons to wait for the Droid Bionic.

When you upgrade to any of these smartphones from your current smartphone you will be able to keep your unlimited data plan as long as you have subscribed before July 7th. The new plans start at $30 a month for 2GB of data and include 2GB of mobile hotspot use for an additional $20 a month.
