Here’s How to Upgrade Your Verizon Motorola Xoom 3G to Android 3.2 Today!

Users are now commenting that select soak test members are now receiving the Android 3.2 Honeycomb update from Verizon Wireless for their 3G/4G-enabled Motorola Xoom tablet. The good news is that even if yo aren’t a soak tester, you can still jump in on the Android 3.2 action before the update gets deployed to users.

If you’re brave enough to make the venture into Android 3.2, here’s what youi need to do. According to My Droid World, users must be on Android 3.1 on their devices to do this, and the Xoom must be running a stock, non-rooted ROM for the update to work.

1. You will need to have unlocked the bootloader.
2. You will need to place this file on a sdcard and then place the sdcard in the Xoom. Download update.
3. You will need to have fastboot in a folder, and have the drivers installed.
4. You need this custom recovery. Download Recovery
5. Rename the recovery you downloaded to recovery.img
6. Restart Xoom in Fastboot (hold bottom volume and power button)
7. Type the following command — fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
8. After the flash is finished type fastboot reboot
9. When the xoom restarts you must wait 2 seconds and then press the down volume key until you see android recovery appear on the Xoom.
10. From here you know what to do.

Those who aren’t up  the challenge can wait for Verizon Wireless and Motorola to push the update out to their devices when the Android 3.2 update is deemed ready for mass consumption. At this time, the update will bring you up to Android 3.2, but it won’t enable 4G connectivity quite yet. For that to happen, you’ll have to wait for Motorol, which had promised a September timeline for the hardware upgrade to install a 4G LTE radio, which would require users shipping in their tablets for repair.

If you are a more advanced user who’s running a non-stock ROM and want to upgrade to Android 3.2 stock or rooted, there are also instructions for you from My Droid World:

You Must Use this nandroid backup if you are running a non stock Rom. This is stock – no Root

7. Type the following command — fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

9. When the xoom restarts you must wait 2 seconds and then press the down volume key until you see android recovery appear on the Xoom.

You can apply the update without rooting if you have a USB OTG cable.  You just need to put the file on a USB thumb drive and reboot the tablet into recovery mode.  Once in recovery, you can select apply update from USB, it will ask you to select the update file and you can then proceed with the update.  Of course, if this ends up not being pushed to the masses, you will then need to unlock your bootloader to return your tablet to a previous version to get the official update.
