Droid Incredible Gingerbread Update Can Be Manually Installed

Adam Mills —  08/22/2011

If you own a Droid Incredible for Verizon, then you’ve probably been waiting patiently (or not) for HTC and Big Red to roll out the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update. The update had been very close to an official roll out only to be pulled because Verizon needed to do more testing on the software. As of right now, there is no concrete date for the update’s roll out but if you can’t wait, there is now a way to manually install Gingerbread.

Android Police has gotten a hold of the RUU which rooted and non-rooted users can use at the cost of losing root and it will wipe all of your apps and what not. There is also the possibility that something could go wrong, say a bricked phone, so please, if you choose to do this, please tread carefully. We aren’t responsible for you bricking your Droid Incredible.

That being said, if you want to take the plunge, here is how to get it done:

  • Download this file (Mirror) (MD5: 096d841530dd2f223ef4a1b701c7d429)
  • Rename the file to PB31IMG.zip
  • Drop it on the root of the SD Card
  • Power off your phone
  • Push the power button and the track button at the same time
  • Highlight bootloader, press Power
  • A few quick steps and boom, Gingerbread

One more thing to keep in mind. An official roll out is likely just around the corner. If you’ve never done this before or you see the need for Gingerbread right now, avoid it. And if you’re savvy and you want to give it a go, let us know how it works out.
