Android 5.0 Release Date Pegged for Fall 2012

While we have heard a bit about Google’s upcoming successor to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, Android 5.0 Jelly Bean, we hadn’t heard about when it would be releasing the software. That is, until today, when Hiroshi Lockheimer, vice president of engineering for mobile at Google, seemingly confirmed a fall launch date for Android 5.0.

In comments made to ComputerWorld, Lockheimer stated that Google is still planning on releasing one major Android update to its mobile operating system per year.

Google released Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in November of 2011 and Lockeheimer hinted that the yearly cycle means that Android 5.0  will probably be released during the fall of 2012.

However, he also says that the company is flexible and that it’s not the release date that drives the engineers behind the project but “the innovation and offering users a great experience.”

While Lockheimer has offered up these tidbits, Google itself has remained mum on Android 5.0.

As it stands, the operating system is fully expected to fall in line with Google’s previous iterations of Android in terms of a name with Android 5.0 Jelly Bean potentially being the software’s full name.

We also expect Google to at least introduce the operating system this July when Google I/O kicks off. Last year, it served as the stage for the Android 4.0 announcement and it would be strange to see the conference pass without an introduction.

As for features, we have heard that Android 5.0 will come with native Webtop/Lapdock capabilities similar to those that Motorola uses on its devices. Apps would run as normal but when a Jelly Bean smartphone gets plugged into a compatible dock, the apps would be blown up into a full-screen version, similar to what you might find on a netbook.

There had also been talk about dual-booting capabilities with Windows 8 but those rumors have since been disputed.

In any event, it appears that we might have an Android 5.0 announcement and quite possibly, a release, before some Android phones event get to see Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich roll out.

Vast majority of users are not getting Android ICS update despite it being launched in October 2012…almost 5 months now and they are talking of Android 5.  What a joke.
