Trying a new brand or a new item at the grocery store is a gamble, and while Consmr for iPhone can’t guarantee a perfect match it can help shoppers avoid duds and find new products that rock.
Much like Yelp delivers restaurant and attraction reviews from a range of users, Consmr puts product reviews at our fingertips while shopping in the grocery store.
There’s no need to type in long product names, just scan the barcode and the app shows reviews and ratings.
I’ve been testing the app for a few weeks and it’s pretty good at finding the items I’ve scanned around the house and at the grocery store.
I’m primarily using it to look up reviews of food and laundry type items, but the app also handles health and beauty products as well as Baby items.
According to Consmr, the database includes over 100,000 reviews for thousands of different items. Several items I scanned didn’t appear in the results or had no reviews, but for the most part Consmr delivers.
The app also lets users search for items and discover items based on the community and Consmr appointed experts. One of the nicest touches is the ability to filter search results for Gluten Free or other attributes. I don’t need to find Gluten Free foods, but several friends and family members will love this feature.
Consmr includes alternative products in the search results and can find places to buy products nearby. The app found several products at Walgreens locations nearby, but didn’t show if it was in stock.
Consmr is a free app for the iPhone and iPod Touch, but barcode scanning is only supported on the iPhone.
