Samsung Galaxy S III 64GB Marches Toward Irrelevancy

By  |  4 Comments

As expected, Samsung has confirmed that the Galaxy S III 64GB model is indeed still coming to shelves and that it will be arriving sometime during the second half of 2012.

Samsung confirmed the news to Android Central in a statement saying that the 64GB model will still be arriving this year, though the company remained mum on any sort of a specific release date.

The company says that market availability will vary based on region so it appears that some places will see the 64GB model launch before others do. That isn’t too surprising considering Samsung released the phone in a staggered manner, launching it first in the UK in May and then in other regions in the weeks after.

There had been cause for concern when a pre-ordering customer, who placed an order through UK retailer Expanys, was notified that the pre-order for the 64GB Galaxy S III had been canceled.

Samsung won’t launch the Galaxy S III 64GB until later this year.

That appears to be some sort of misunderstanding now that Samsung has confirmed that the device is still on the way sometime later this year.

Not that it matters.

This is a device that should have been available right from the get-go or at least a few weeks after launch. Not a month, not two months, and definitely not as long as I think it’s going to be before this device hits shelves here in the United States. If it does at all.

This business of announcing that it’ll be available, then remaining silent about it, then seeing rumors swirl, then having to partially calm customers with a confirmation is a scene that is becoming to common in the world of Android and it’s something that is hurting the launches of these phones.

Don’t get me wrong, the Galaxy S III is a successful launch with Samsung selling millions of devices worldwide, but I can’t help but wonder how many more devices it would have sold had it launched the 64GB model along with the 16GB and 32GB models and how many customers it would have pleased had it done so.

There are too many promises when it comes to Android launches.

In my opinion, Samsung is going to have a heck of a time selling the 64GB model. In fact, I don’t even know if it should bother launching it in the United States at all. There are two reasons for that.

The Nexus 4 and the iPhone 5.

By the time Samsung gets the 64GB Galaxy S III out, we will likely be on the verge of an iPhone 5 launch. Consumers will want to at least wait and see the iPhone 5 before deciding on a new smartphone. Foxconn’s CEO has said that it will blow the Galaxy S III out of the water and it’s possible that it might.

Second, with a launch in the second half of this year, Android enthusiasts, people who would likely be those buying the Galaxy S III 64GB, will be prone to wait for the next Nexus smartphone, which should launch by the end of 2012.

Throw in the fact that many consumers have already bought a Galaxy S III and the fact that Samsung has to reveal exactly what regions and what carriers will get the 64GB variant and you have to wonder why Samsung would even launch the device at all.

Anyone holding out for the 64GB Galaxy III?

Some consumers wait to see new iPhones, but Apple keeps making these overhyped, underwhelming iPhones, so more and more folks are getting Androids than iPhones.

I hope they release it in the US cause in a few months it will be cheap enough to make a great media player device.

Considering the fact that all the S III are expandable (unlike my galaxy nexus), I would buy the 16 gb model and throw a 32 or 64 gb micro card in it. No since paying $50 to upgrade from 16 to 32 or waiting for the 64.
