Droid Bionic Ice Cream Sandwich Update Gets Embarrassing News

Published

on

Unless Motorola and Verizon miraculously roll out the Motorola Droid Bionic Ice Cream Sandwich update by this Sunday, August 19th, the device will have been beaten to the Ice Cream Sandwich punch by a basic smartphone sporting less specifications.

Earlier today, Sprint revealed that it would be launching the Kyocera Rise on August 19th, a device sporting a single core processor and unknown amount of RAM, a small display, and a release date just shy of a year from the Droid Bionic’s own release date.

Why does this matter? Well, because the Kyocera Rise will be running, you guessed it, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich right out of the box, an update that Motorola and Verizon seemingly can’t get to the Droid Bionic. Of course, it’s possible that we could see the Droid Bionic ICS update between now and August 19th but it wouldn’t make it any less embarrassing. At the very worst, it will have almost been beaten out by the Kyocera Rise.

This is just another example of the sad state of Android.

Devices like the HTC ThunderBolt and Motorola Droid Bionic, devices that have pretty solid specifications, have to wait through broken promises and rumors until they get their first major Android update.

Then, on top of the waits, the software often arrives with bugs on board.

Motorola-Droid-Bionic-Box-248x300

The Droid Bionic may get beaten to ICS by a low-end smartphone.

And finally, to make matters worse, devices with lesser specifications pop up with the software that they have yet to receive. And it’s not just an Ice Cream Sandwich problem either.

There is currently a grand total of two smartphones here in the United States that officially run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, Google’s latest update that was released in July.

(Read: Verizon Galaxy Nexus Jelly Bean Update Release Date Still Unknown.)

Several Nexus devices, including the Sprint and Verizon Galaxy Nexus have yet to receive their upgrades to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, which means that other Android devices like the HTC EVO 4G LTE on Sprint, Samsung Galaxy S III on all five major U.S. carriers, HTC One X and so on might be headed down the same embarrassing road as the Motorola Droid Bionic.

Sometimes, I honestly wonder why more Android customers haven’t been hauled away in straitjackets.

Well since this is NOT a problem with Google, it is a problem with the phone manufacturer I am not sure why Google should ‘get their act together.’ Their latest operating system, Jellybean, can run on the original Android device. They are not responsible for what the phone manufacturer does, they are responsible for the software. So if there is a problem with the actual OS, then you may have room to say something, but the manufacturer updating their phones, is 100% on the manufacturer….

Google recently purchased Motorola. That doesn’t miraculously make previously built hardware easier to upgrade. Time Warner bought Insight Communications over a year ago and I still receive bills from Insight. Takeovers and acquisitions take time.

It’s not Google’s fault their Motorola and Verizon can’t seem to come up with a good working model of ICS that works well on their phones. I have a Droid Razr Maxx and it is more glitchy since I upgraded. My wife has the Bionic and I don’t want her to have the same issues I have.

Its the handset developers (motorola) and Verizons fault that they cannot get the update out, not Google. Besides I would always take a droid over an Iphone since with the apple products your paying for the brand, not the hardware… the bionic is running a dual core with a gig of RAM… Iphone is only running 512mb of ram, 1/2 that of majority of Android devices RAM.

For those who don’t know RAM is what makes your phone/computer go fast and makes apps run smoothly, most androids have more of it then apple products, its that apple has built up its little marketing empire so well that people are attracted to a less efficient product.

In reality the bionic has more power then the IPad, which only has 512 mb of RAM as well…

(sorry if this post is poorly written, I just had surgery and am not feeling the best)

I have been owning an iMac and MBP, just recently bought a rMBP, and when Apple finally releases an iPhone that sports an LTE signal, I’ll still probably stick to a Droid, because when I bought my Droid, it had better specs and faster service than an iPhone. I might test drive one, but I see myself returning it because I’ve been able to get everything to sync between my Macs and my phone, so there’s really not a need to be brand-specific just because of frustrations on waiting for an update.

Maybe Bionic gets first JB…due to lack of corporate fiscal responsibility ….or continued corporate lack of reapect for paying patrons…which is a trend of US business mentality. Going back to non smartphone and release my data plan back to.carrier and use laptop. Thanks Big Red ( Lil repect) and Google (Android) for making others look superior .

I was the first person in my town to get a bionic i remember how much this phone was marketed. It was supposed to be such an amazing phone. Every since January of 2011 when it was first announced i remeber tracking this phone online awaiting its release. When it first came out it was a little disapointing, however with all the problems (problems connecting to networks, far superior phones coming out les than 3 months later, this phone not even talked about to get jellybean much less ics, plus how difficult motorola makes is to root thier phones) i have decided and cannot wait to get a new phone when my contract runs up and never buy another motorola phone.

You know what? This is pissing me off! For the longest I’ve lied to myself and said this was okay but now fuck my bionic this is sad. I check for a manual update everyday like a fool! Your device is up to date no updated needed at this time kiss ass!! Im done all i care about in a phone now is one that gets its updates.. Iphone you win. All this updating across several phones only to have it pushed back because another phone had bugs is for the birds.

I check mine for updates too. …everyday. Since we have been lied to about the update so much and not kept up to date, I feel as if maybe they will sneak it out there. I’m with you. Screw this phone and Motorola. Guess I’ll go with Samsung.

I have always liked my Motorolas. They have always had the best reception and call quality. My first Droid was the Motorola Droid, then the X, then the X2, and now the Bionic. This will be my last Motorola. This phone is buggy and we are only a few months from 2013 and we still have not received the update promised back in 2011. Unacceptable.

iPhone and Apple wins. This will be my last Motorola phone. I don’t have a problem with not meeting a deadline. I DO have a problem with not meeting a deadline not saying a f’in word to the customers that are patiently waiting for it. Motorola really screwed the pooch on this one.

I feel the same way, just about. I never liked Motorola that much in the first place. The first wait came when they kept delaying the release of the Bionic. Now we’re still waiting for ICS and a new OS is already out. I am buying the new iPhone. However, I am definitely keeping the Google Nexus 7 (JB) tablet I just bought. Google did one hell of job with it. It’s actually the tablet to beat.

It IS corporate PR irresponsibility. But while we’re filling the space under the bus, let’s don’t forget to toss Big Red and Google under there as well. Moto buries us in silence, and Big Red is in constant denial…except for the times when they are busily laying all the blame on Moto. Yet we all KNOW that Big Red is the last domino in the chain, and a very big one to tip since they insist on their bloatware occupying space in the update.

Then there’s Google. How can it be lost on them that such a large contingent of Android users (Bionic owners) are being ignored and/or dissed, and the potential market share hit that will occur when those dissed owners turn to Apple as their contracts expire. And perhaps, Big R, to a competitor network. I have three phones on my account with Red: One is already up for renewal, and I’m not exactly rushing in; one expires in early November, and my Bionic account runs until next May. Guess where I’m heading next?

    • wfm

      08/15/2012 at 10:15 pm

Im with you. I came from AT&T/iPhone. When this VZW contract is up its goodbye to Big R, Moto, and especially Google/Android. What a crock! In fact it’s OK Moto/VZW if you don’t release ICS for the Bionic. It seems fairly clear that all you would be releasing would be bugs anyway. Why bother? I request to be kicked to the curb. Because the decision to kick you to the curb you made for me. I switched on Xmas Eve last year, so that gives you the exact date in 2013. You see I can give you a firm fixed date for my next update, you cannot.

        08/20/2012 at 7:16 am

Why are people angry with Google so much?

Let me remind everyone that the reason that apple updates their iPhone seamlessly is because they don’t have to worry about updating hundreds of different phones across many different manufacturers. If you’re tired of waiting for android updates, buy a nexus branded device and it’s just like owning an iPhone or iPad with apple.

At least my hotspot works for the most part. Take that Verizon as burn through 25-30 GB a month. Honestly, I’m more worried how many bugs there will be when ICS comes to my bionic. At least my phone is still working compared to some friends with ICS on RAZR and RAZR MAXX. My biggest problems are data issues especially email

You guys who keep bashing Motorola and google, yet praising the iPhone need to pay more attention. Sure it is annoying that we don’t get any news on our update, but at least our phones get updated to the newest software. IPhones just release a phone everyone they have to upgrade..

I did follow bionic when it was first peeked at the electronics expo and thought, hey, finally a phone that I can be happy with for a long time,,,,,,,,yeeees, I too was disappointed but the phone served its purpose pretty good for about a year, than, all the talk about the ics update and all the better phones surfacing for same or less $$ kinda ticked me off.
2 months ago, I found one of the so called bugged and early versions of official ics leak and immediately downloaded and installed, have been a happy camper since.
Since this was straight from motorola, I didn’t need any rooting or special skills.
I am not getting the processor speed increase like the later leaks, but, hey I have been on ics with its full features and very happy, it actually is a great piece of phone with different battery life.
    Cheers.

It is not just the lack of update, it is the complete silence from Motorola about the update. Simply put, they sold us an already obsolete phone and then lied to us for months (years) claiming they would upgrade it. I do like my Bionic and it does what I need without ICS, but it will be the last Android I own.

I have to say that since the last update, the bionic has been solid. ICS has some nice eye candy but it works well right now and I see no reason to mess with a phone that just got rid of all the bugs.

    08/16/2012 at 10:41 am

Well here is one good reason never to go with IPhone it has no 4g capabilities, none of them out on the market at this time. So lets get this right some third rate company develops a phone and is able to get ICS running on it and that should embarrass bigger companies? How about we all wait to see just how great this single core, and hmm unknown amount of memory, runs before bashing companies that have a long proven track record. Has anyone thought that the delay may be due to the issues that arouse with the Razr and they don’t want a repeat of that. I have been running ICS on Bionic for around 4 months, and guarantee no cheap phone will compare.

    08/16/2012 at 12:47 pm

My next phone will have to be on the market 3-6 months and have great reviews. If it happens to be a mortorola, I am not getting that one. The Droid Bionic was my third and last Droid!

  20. John

    08/16/2012 at 3:43 pm

I don’t think this shows, or reflects the state of Android. I think it highlights what Verizon and Motorola can and cannot do for their customers. And, they are certainly both repeat offenders when it comes to the Droid Bionic. Could have been good, heck, could have been great. Big Red and Moto just swung and missed after dropping the ball for the 4th time.

Hopefully, the two companies right the ship and take care of us Bionic owners…

And, how quickly people forget, and overlook the issues that plagued recent i-devices. They are very good devices, but no one can honestly say they are without fault. Their laundry list is there… as is AT&T’s.

Fair, unbiased reporting would be preferred, where the story is fact based, not pure speculation with a i-opinion mixed in on every issue.

“I don’t think this shows, or reflects the state of Android. I think it highlights what Verizon and Motorola can and cannot do for their customers.”

Maybe change the ‘Can’ and ‘Cannot’ to ‘Will’ and ‘Won’t’. Like others who have posted, I am anxiously awaiting ICS. This will be my last Verizon phone before I give up Motorola. Their DROID line has been better than anything else I’ve seen, excepting maybe the Galaxy S III. I won’t get that device on VZW however, Sprint is looking mighty appealing. Also, when / IF the fruit based phone gets LTE, maybe… nah. Can’t even bring myself to type that on a third tier blog.

I’m with you there. At least it’s not like Windows where you have to pay for a new OS version upgrade from a crappy one (cough cough Vista). I assume the delay is due to problems between ICS and the Bionic hardware. I’d rather wait an extra month or two to get a well tested and improved OS that isn’t going to crash all the time.

What a bunch of F–king cry baby’s. Where your at is as important as the phone! Coverage means everything. 3G or 4G. I own the Bionic it works great on 4G, screaming video. If your in less 3G you basic phone and maybe text. Grab a Kleenex and get over it!

    08/18/2012 at 12:58 am

Why exactly is everyone bitching about updates to a phone that quite frankly doesn’t seem to seen said updates yet. There are little to no bugs with the bionic seeing as I own one myself. I rarely get force closes it runs very smoothly and rooting it doesn’t take more then 5 minutes of my time.

:phone users get a clue the iPhone will alllways be a lesser device specs wise and price wise. Almost every app you love on both devices most likely are free on the android market.
The iPhone gives you little to no personization due to the simple fact that it isn’t open source so 3rd party custom apps like home replacement apps to add some flare will never happen. On iphones.
The browser is always iPhones biggest thing.its fast ….OK it also does less than androids browsers. It lacks flash which majority of all websites support. It doesn’t have text wrap to resize and move text around to fit your screen with tapping to zoom. And on top of that its internet speed sucks to boot.if it did have those two features guaranteed it would take double if not longer to load a single full desktop page and not run nearly as smoothly.

On top of all this majority of the apps available on both operating systems freeze up on iPhones more due to the lack of ram built into the device. There are no high end models of iPhones its just which hard drive do u want and that’s it. You don’t truely own your iPhone we android supports do own our phones though simply because its open source giving us the power do with our phones whatever we desire out of the box. No jail breaking required. Rooting supported and recommended for those who wish to gain further control than they already have but not at all required. IPhones almost beg u to jail break it once you realize the lack of ownership you have over it.

Just have to say after reading these reviews I really want to tip my hat for Motorola and Bionic. I’ve owned many of their DROID phones between myself and my wife. I have always been proud to show them off and their capabilities. The biggest features that have kept me coming back is their combination of strong build design and hefty specs. Phones that have been ahead of the curve a little spec wise often lack the strong build design and bench mark test have shown that the heavier specs don’t blow any of moto’s phones out of the water. Moto has always seemed to offer the right balance of features specs and build design to offer the best smart phones on the market and their many style releases insure the user the chance to grab one that suits their personal needs and will last the long haul. As long as your not one of those phone envy people who take it personal every time a new phone is released. Updates are fine and are an added extra but I bought my bionic because of the software it had not it’s potential. The next Moto I buy will be the same way. Apple Phone, sorry their phones are embarrassingly lacking in every way.

Why would I buy the RAZR HD, if it is “upgradable” to JB? I am still waiting for ICS on the Bionic. I have learned my lesson and will not pay the early adopter premium again. I’ll wait a few months longer after a phone comes out with JB to get that phone, at a lower price.

Maybe I’m missing something, but I don’t understand why Motorola needs to support OS upgrades for their phones at all.
Does the average lifespan of a smartphone really warrant that commitment?
I never keep a phone more than two years when my contract renews, and I’m guessing that is typical for most folks.
Wouldn’t you rather the smartphone manufacturers put their energy into developing new models than trying to upgrade the old ones?

    • Bionic Reimbursement

      08/20/2012 at 9:49 am

Sure, that is ideal for a company. However, the bionic has been totally sunsetted by this most recent official Verizon update, and don’t tell me it hasn’t because the evidence of it is blatantly obvious. This should be ILLEGAL and everyone who has a bionic should be reimbursed for at least 2 months of internet service, if not the entirety of their bill.

The Bionic has only been out for at least a year, is dual core, and is definitely capable of running ICS. The most recent update uterly destroys the internet services, both WIFI and 4G have been completely distorted. The 4G drops repeatedly which is from the software not the device. The WIFI, even on a 1000mb/s connection is slower than 4G. These two factors are ridiculous and should be fixed immediately. The fact they haven’t yet, shows Verizon is trying to shut down the Bionic early so as to get customers to dump it before their 2 year contract is up. This, like I said before, should be very ILLEGAL, and I advise if you own a Bionic to seek reimbursement or even a class action lawsuit.

This kind of marketing is nothing new, Microsoft and Apple both do it to their OS’s, so you buy the newest versions. For Verizon to do this to a phone that hasn’t even been out for a year however, is purely disgusting.

    • the interwebz

@Charles stfu the bionic hasn’t even been out a year yet and the two recent verizon updates fd my 4G and wfi up. So yes they should fix this.

@ Bionic Reimbursement dude nail on the fn head bro!! I’m going to disect the code and see what debugging measures I can take to prove this “sunsetting” theory. My phone used to work fine for the first like 8 months I had it never thought I’d need to root but now it looks like my only option. F verizon for their bs updates.

no update is guaranteed nor is is binding when it is in PR information. granted it is bad for the company to promise what it can’t keep. but they would lose either way if they released and there was bugs people would be *itching. however i am starting to think it won’t get ICS. its not the first phone to be pulled from an update and won’t be the last. hardware is different on every phone. sometimes what worked initially won’t work later. its not the company’s fault thought they should be be more conservative about offering something before they say its official.

i have accepted that ICS won’t come to bionic for a while if ever. others sadly should move on. heck i accepted when it was pulled from the official bionic website. it used to be listed as “upgradeable to ICS” about 6 months ago that was removed. but the razor series kept the notice.

@the interwebz its why you don’t update and be the first guine pig. heck unless i see something worth updating i never update… that includes generic software. i have learned my lesson, when i updated once to see a title bar changed and a free function turned into a paid. (requires upgrade to paid account).

I see a much simpler approach, albeit perhaps naive.

Google owns Android; if someone wants to produce a phone that utilizes their product, force them (contractually) to play according to Googles rules. They dont play, they dont get Android.

To that end, Google and Motorola should be able to set a higher standard. Period.

And to whomever is listening at Google, Motorola and/or Verizon : SHAME on you for messing this up so badly. Our phone is worse off than the ‘red-headed step child’. From my perspective, a waste of money.

The bionic in evolving in the rom/mod/tweak/dev scene. We now have kexec to run arbitrary kernels and it has been shown like running above 1.6ghz. Those of you who jumped ship like moto did deserve the lesser phones you got =p

Ok I have had enough. Come o people get half a brain between all of you. What the heck does Verizon have to do with phone functionality or software updates…absolutely nothing…they service providers. Getting angry with Verizon for the lack of software update is like getting mad at orange grove produce farmers for not having pulp free orange juice in the supermarket….I means its just absolutely absurd

Actually, Verizon has quite a bit to do with the update, since their OEM branding goes into it and they have to approve the update.

What’s the big deal!!! If ICS was released for the Bionic and there were problems because it was released without being thoroughly tested, the same people complaining about not having it soon enough would be complaining even more. Go figure!!!!

I am a bionic owner and at times have glitches that I assume will not happen once it is running on ics, and yes it is verizons fault for not being honest when they sold and marketed the phone!! Pissed off you bet but I am trying to hold on to that last thread of hope before I go to Samsung and the G3 When I had a steady 4g signal the bionic was amazing so for someone who has loved motorola phones I might not be able to hold out much longer! Wished I was computer savy cause Id flash the 247 leak myself if I wernt scared!!LOL
