HTC One X Android 5.0 Update in Doubt

Published

on

While most of the news in regards to future HTC upgrades has been good, today, there is some bad news afoot as a noted HTC leakster claims that the HTC One X Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update will be the last Android update for the aging dual-core smartphone which means that an upgrade to Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie is in doubt.

Since the debut of Android 4.2 Jelly Bean back in November, we have only seen a sparse amount of non-Nexus devices upgraded to the latest version of Android. HTC, one of the largest manufacturers of Android devices in the world, actually just released its latest flagship, the HTC One, without Android 4.2 on board. Instead, the device is running Android 4.1. The company has also yet to release any information about the HTC One’s upcoming Android 4.2 update or Android 4.2 updates for older devices.

Fortunately, we have seen some unofficial but reliable information leak out suggesting that HTC has plans to upgrade a host of devices with Android 4.2 along with Sense 5. Rumors suggest they will be coming together for a number of HTC phones, including the HTC One X. And while that news is great for HTC One X owners, there is also some potential bad news at work here regarding future updates.

According to HTC leakster and developer @LLabTooFeR, the HTC One X Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update will be its last major Android update which means that as of right now, its Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie update is in doubt.

At Google I/O in May, Google will supposedly be debuting Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie, the latest version of Android, and one that will replace Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. So far, no devices have been confirmed to be getting the update, which means that the HTC One X Android 5.0 update is still possible, but @LlabTooFeR has been reliable with his information so at this point, the roll out is certainly in jeopardy.

If it doesn’t occur, it wouldn’t be the first time that HTC users have been burned. The HTC Rezound for instance, despite having solid hardware, has been left on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The Droid Incredible 2, which was promised Android 4.0 by the end of August, is still without its update.

If the HTC One X Android 5.0 update is in doubt, then its perceivable that other lesser phones, like the HTC One SV and HTC One S, may never see Android 5.0 either.

@LLabTooFeR also alludes to the Galaxy S3 as potentially not getting the update, something that we’ve heard is a possibility. However, given that his leaks typically pertain to HTC phones, Galaxy S3 owners should take that with a larger grain of salt than the possibility of an HTC One X Android 5.0 update never rolling out.

The HTC One X is, on the other hand, heavily rumored to be getting the new Sense 5 along with an upgrade to Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, the most current version of Android.

That is why HTC is losing market share–over promise and under deliver. I liked their hardware, but their SW support is horrendous. I have since switched to a Galaxy Nexus. The HTC One is a beautiful phone, but with HTC’s support record I will pass.

Umm, last time I checked it was a tegra 3 1.5Ghz QUAD-CORE… Also the fact it’s only just coming up to a year old, I think qualifies it as a fairly new phone; it certainly ain’t some ageing dinosaur!!

The US version is a 1.5GHz Quad with LTE. Much better imo.

Umm, no, everybody knows the USA variant is a dual-core S4, it’s just that Americans don’t seem to know that everyone isn’t an American! The author makes no note of the fact he’s talking of the less numerous American version, as opposed to the more common International model; last I read, the US variant may not receive the update, but who knows…

one x has no need for KLP. every time a phone gets a major update, there’re complaints about the compatibility “it was rushed” or “it has had “. People need to consider that these phones are specifically designed for release, not for support. if you want to have a phone that is specifically designed for support, get a nexus device. I have my One X on 4.1.1 right now, and when sense 5 is released, i may very well not complete the update… unchangeable changes? a possibility. and ugly as UI for sense 5? thats what it looks like to me…. and btw North american variant (at&t and rogers) is DUAL core 1.5 ghz, WELL worth the hardware hit for LTE (wtf is the point of a quad core phone).

    Amen David,
People complain about updates not working then complain when they don’t get them. Serious be happy with what you got. If you don’t like it get out and try some Roms. Basically spend a crap ton of money on a new phone or make it work and quite your belly aching.
