Sony Xperia Ion Jelly Bean Update Leaks

The Sony Xperia Ion Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update, which is currently slated to roll out sometime before the end of May, has leaked out ahead of its eventual release affording those who are interested in getting the software early the opportunity to do so.

In late April, Sony finally confirmed good news for a host of Xperia smartphone owners, including owners of the Xperia Ion and the Xperia S. That news of course pertained to their missing Android 4.1 Jelly Bean updates that were promised many months ago, but have yet to roll out to owners of either device.

The company informed owners of those two devices, and several others, that their devices would be getting their Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update sometime before the month of May ends. No specific release dates have been mentioned thus far though we have seen the Xperia S Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update leak out ahead of its release.

Now, it’s the Sony Xperia Ion’s turn. According to XperiaBlog, the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update has leaked out courtesy of XDA-Developers forums, offering Xperia Ion owners a chance to install the software ahead of schedule. The update is available for consumer devices thanks to the work of DoomLord who has ported the firmware for consumer grade devices.

The firmware is build 6.2.B.0.203 and it’s only available to those with an unlocked bootloader, at least for the moment. It’s also possible that this won’t be the final version of the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean software headed to the Xperia Ion. In other words, this update likely won’t appeal to users beyond those who are comfortable tinkering with all aspects of their device.

The arrival of this leak also means that the update is one step closer to arrival though a release date is still unknown. We still expect Sony to hit its May deadline for the Jelly Bean updates of the Xperia Ion, S, SL and Arco S as the company has given no indication that any of the updates are delayed beyond this month.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean will take these devices from Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich to an older version of Jelly Bean. It’s currently not known whether any of these devices will get taken to Android 4.2, the most current version of Android software.

I am eagerly waiting for the update from sony itself. And will not take any risk updating with third part firmware. And again Sony should update the users with the latest version and not with an older version. They made some superb hardware and late in every software release. shame.
