Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat Update: First Update Arrives Adam Mills11/26/2013 The Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update release has begun and it unsurprisingly has started with the Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition Android 4.4 KitKat update, the device that is sold on the Google Play Store. The roll out kicks off the Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat deployment, a deployment that should extend well into 2014. Yesterday, we saw the kernels for the Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition Android 4.4 KitKat update get posted, a sign that the Over-the-Air update was close. The HTC One Google Play Edition saw the exact same thing happen, only its update started rolling out shortly thereafter. We knew the Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition update was close and sure enough, it started rolling out late in the day to users.Advertisement Google announced the update on its Google+ page, telling users that starting today, the Samsung Galaxy S4 GPe would be getting its upgrade to Android 4.4 KitKat. We assume that that means that the Over-the-Air process is going to take some time to complete, much like the Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 OTA updates that started rolling out last week but still haven’t finished. We haven’t seen the update arrive on our Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition quite yet, a sign that the roll out is going to deploy in stages, stages that could mean a wait of a week or more for some users. Users should not resort to the Google Framework Services trick to try and force the update as it could have untold effects on the device’s stability.Advertisement The upgrade will take the smartphone from Android 4.3 Jelly Bean to Android 4.4 KitKat, which means that it will have a number of enhancements and features on board once the software is downloaded and installed.Advertisement Samsung’s Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition becomes the first Galaxy S4 to receive the Android 4.4 KitKat update though it will certainly not be the last. The other Galaxy S4 models around the world will likely get the upgrade as well though Samsung still remains mum on the subject. Rumors suggest that the software won’t land until 2014, perhaps as early as January, though that remains a rumor and unconfirmed. The company is likely still laser focused on the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update roll out that finally deployed to the last big name Galaxy S4 in the United States today and still needs to push out for a number of carriers around the world. Once that roll out is complete, Samsung will then turn its attention to Android 4.4 KitKat and all it has to offer.
