Carrier Backtracks on HTC One Android 4.4 KitKat Update Release

French carrier SFR, which curiously stated that the HTC One Android 4.4.2 KitKat update had been deployed, backtracked from its comments today saying that the update hasn’t been released but that it’s on track with its slated February release.

Yesterday, we reported that SFR, a carrier that is well known for its public software announcements, stated that it had deployed the HTC One Android 4.4.2 KitKat update. We took the carrier at its word though the pronouncement was curious for several reasons.

HTC-One

One, it would have marked the start of the European HTC One Android 4.4 KitKat update roll out, a roll out that is indeed slated for arrival by the end of January. SFR typically is not on the front lines of major Android updates and the carrier had previously stated that the update would arrive in February. Second, we didn’t see any of the usual suspects confirm the update’s arrival. Leaksters like LlabTooFer remained silent about the update which was extremely unusual. We also didn’t see HTC One owners in France boasting about the update.

Still, we took the carrier at its word as it clearly stated that it had begun pushing out the long awaited HTC One Android 4.4.2 KitKat update early yesterday morning. As it turns out, SFR made a mistake.

The carrier has updated its post today, saying that the update has been received and that it’s in the labs awaiting technical validation. The carrier says that the update is on track for a roll out in February, a window that the carrier had previously advertised. It does not provide a specific date nor does it say why it originally claimed the update was available.

HTC France says SFR was in error so it’s looking like the company simply made a mistake. What’s clear though is that SFR is not the first carrier to unleash the Android 4.4.2 KitKat update and that it likely won’t be. Android 4.4 KitKat updates for the HTC One are expected to touch down before the end of January and with the carrier suggesting February, it may be toward the back of the pack.
