Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat Update Release Closer for U.S.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update release date has inched closer for the United States today as the Sprint Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update’s kernel source has been released by Samsung, a sign that the update has moved closer to a release, a release that could come at any time now.

While companies like HTC and Sony continue to talk about Android 4.4 KitKat with their user bases, Samsung remains tight-lipped about its Android 4.4 KitKat progress. We know that the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat update has rolled out but we also know that it has hit a standstill, one that emerged after it was revealed that the update broke third-party accessories. Samsung has since promised a fix.

We also know that the Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update is evidently available on two carrier-branded models in South Korea. The update has not spread since that news came to light earlier this month.

And finally, we’ve seen both the AT&T Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat updates leak, though, we still haven’t seen the updates land in the United States. Samsung isn’t saying anything but its actions are speaking louder than words and today, we have another sign of an Android 4.4 KitKat update for the U.S.

Samsung has released the kernel source for the Sprint Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update. This is a big step for Galaxy S4 developers in the United States but it’s also a great sign for the general public. Samsung typically doesn’t release a kernel source unless the update is official, something that is echoed by the knowledgeable Android Police.

It could mean that this build, L720VPUFNAE, will be rolling out soon. And at the worst, it means that Samsung and Sprint have taken a significant step towards the final release of the Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update.

It does make sense that it would be Sprint’s Galaxy S4 that is first to Android 4.4 KitKat. The carrier has done a fantastic job of getting its flagship devices updated in an extremely quick manner and it looks like that will extend to the Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update as well. The carrier has not confirmed the update’s arrival though which means that the first U.S. Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 release date remains unknown.

Usually, we see the international versions of Samsung’s Galaxy devices get the update first. In this case, that would mean the GT-i9500 and the GT-i9505. Neither of those devices have seen the update and we imagine that they will get the update before it lands in the United States.

Canadian carrier Rogers claims that the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat updates will be hitting its users soon, a sign that the updates could be landing for carriers in North American sooner rather than later. Rogers has not yet confirmed specific dates.

The update itself isn’t expected to be a big one. The leaks that we’ve seen, coupled with the Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat update details, point to an incremental update that offers some user interface tweaks and many of the features found on Android 4.4 KitKat including emoji support. The Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update likely won’t be the end of the road for the Galaxy S4 as it is still less than a year old.

With a Samsung Galaxy S5 launch coming up, it could be that the Galaxy S4 receives at least some of the Galaxy S5’s new software features in a future Android update.

I am using a Samsung Galaxy s2. I wonder if I’m even eligible for the KitKat update. I have read conflicting reports. Hopefully!

  2. Shane says

Galaxy S2 wont be able to get KitKat. You should be happy since your phone received JellyBean 4.1 considering your phone is 3 years old.
