Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy S3, Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 Update Breakdown Pt. 6

Last week, we saw a bunch of details emerge for those looking ahead to their Samsung Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 3, and Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat update. Updates rolled out, release dates emerged and we even saw some conflicting information touch down. Here, we break it all down and take a close look at the progress of the Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, and Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat updates.

Back in January, Samsung kicked off the Android 4.4 KitKat update roll out when it released the incremental update for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. A few weeks later, the company pushed out the update for the Galaxy S4, its other flagship and a device that will soon be replaced by the Samsung Galaxy S5.

Since mid-February, the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat updates have been pushing out at an extremely rapid pace, hitting devices around the globe left and right. And while the pace certainly has been incredible, there are plenty of Android 4.4 updates that have yet to hit Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy S4 users.

As March has gone on, we’ve not only seen more Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy S4 updates pop up, we’ve started to hear about Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat updates. These updates will apparently roll out in the near future, something that has some owners of Samsung’s aging flagships excited. We saw some because Android 4.4 KitKat introduced a serious problem for those that use the microSD card slot.

In any event, Android 4.4 KitKat is on the way for more Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy S4 variants and it will be landing for the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 in the next few weeks. With that in mind, it’s time to take another close look at the progress as we offer our sixth installment of our Android 4.4 KitKat update breakdown series.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Last week, we saw the fast pace of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat update continue as the update landed for an assortment of carriers in Canada. Rogers had said that its update would emerge in late March but it, and other carriers surprised us with a much faster update.

Bell, Rogers, TELUS, Videotron, Eastlink, and WIND Mobile all rolled out their versions of the Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat update and those who are interested in jumping from Android 4.3 Jelly Bean to Android 4.4 KitKat right now should be able to do so.

The update has also recently rolled out in Romania and Slovakia and we’re hearing that it also has hit Galaxy Note 3 users in Ireland that reside on the carrier Three.

As for updates that remain in the shadows, most recently we saw Vodafone Australia confirm an Android 4.4 KitKat update for its version of the Galaxy Note 3. Its confirmation came just a few days after fellow Australian carrier Optus confirmed its own Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat update for arrival.

Vodafone says that the update is scheduled to undergo testing while Optus says that the update will emerge in early or mid-April after it completes testing.

In the United States, there are still two Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat updates that remain. AT&T and Verizon have yet to roll out their updates and we saw no sign of them in the past week. AT&T customers in particular have been putting a ton of pressure on AT&T to get the update ready as they continue to suffer from major GPS issues.

One other thing of note, we saw Skype fix an Android 4.4 KitKat battery bug on board the Nexus 5 and the Galaxy Note 3 with its most recent update. Those that use Skype will certainly want to look into that if battery life problems exist on board the Galaxy Note 3.

Samsung Galaxy S4

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat was at a bit of a standstill last week. Recently, the update hit the GT-i9500 in Turkey, Taiwan and Brazil. We also have seen the update land for the GT-i9505. Most recently, users in the United Kingdom have told us that they’ve received the update. Galaxy S4 users on EE and O2 say they have received the brand new update.

Fortunately, we know that things should pick up soon. Optus and Vodafone have both confirmed updates for their variants. Optus says that testing will begin shortly and that its update will roll out in early to mid-April after testing. Vodafone’s two Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat updates don’t have dates but they do have testing scheduled. That should mean a roll out within the next few weeks.

We’ve seen a number of other Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat updates confirmed for arrival. French carrier SFR has said that it will push out its update soon and UK carrier ThreeUK says that it hopes to have details soon.

In the United States, several Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat updates remain but thus far, we haven’t seen any details emerge publicly. The Verizon Galaxy S4 update is the most glaring omission though we’ve heard that it’s currently in internal testing. That probably means that the Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 update is as well.

MetroPCS, Cricket, and C Spire have not confirmed Android 4.4 KitKat updates yet, despite pleas from users, and we expect those updates to emerge in an around the Verizon Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 update’s release date.

Samsung Galaxy S3

The Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 KitKat update has an interesting story. Weeks ago, Samsung and Sprint confirmed it for arrival in the United States. We also saw Samsung Poland confirm the Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 KitKat update only, it confirmation was for the 4G LTE version of the device.

Samsung’s Polish wing confirmed that it has no plans to deliver an Android 4.4 KitKat update for the 1GB version of the Galaxy S4. This has thrown people into a panic given that many international variants utilize 1GB of RAM. The GT-i9300 for instance, one of the most popular variants, uses 1GB of RAM.

Since that proclamation, we haven’t seen any positive information emerge. Australian carriers confirmed Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat updates but said nothing about the Galaxy S3 update. We also saw Samsung Arabia say that it currently has no plans to update the GT-i9300 version of the Galaxy S3 to Android 4.4. The regional wing said “as of now” which means that there is a chance that it could get updated but nothing is set in stone.

In the U.S., we expect all carriers to get the update given Sprint’s confirmation and given that they all tout 2GB of RAM. It’s still not clear when the updates will roll out but we imagine that we could see them soon given that the Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update’s roll out is nearly complete in the U.S.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 situation is much clearer. We should see the Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat update emerge around the world given that it has 2GB of RAM and given that we’ve already seen a number of confirmations emerge.

Samsung USA, Sprint, Samsung Poland, and Optus have all already confirmed the update for arrival and this week, we saw another Australian carrier join the fun. Vodafone says that it will be issuing a Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat update at some point in the future. It says that testing has not begun which means that we could still be weeks out.

What’s interesting is that Samsung Arabia also says that it, at this time, has no plans to release a Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat update. That is extremely curious and we still expect the update to roll out there.

Look for more details to emerge in the coming weeks as carriers work to get their aging Galaxy Note 2 variants upgraded to the latest version of Android. Keep in mind, there is a chance that Android 4.4 KitKat will be the last update for both the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2.

My neighbor is working part time and averaging $15000 a month. I’m a single mum and just got my first paycheck for $6546! I still can’t believe it. I tried it out cause I got really desperate and now I couldn’t be happier. Here’s what I do… http://goo.gl/wEqBhe

Im sure all Samsung galaxy will be updated to 4.4 kitkat sooner or later. Verizon is always so slow with there updates. So let’s hope and pray that it will come soon.

I thought KitKat was supposed to work on lesser powered phones. At 1GB, the S3 should be well in on specs. If S3 can’t get the 4.4 update, it will probably be worth less when I come to sell it.
No more Samsungs for me, anyway. They should make sure a phone works properly, instead of all the junk they seem to be doing

    Samsung- take note!!!!!!!
Windows phone 8.1 update will be out soon- on ALL windows phone devices. And many more updates after that. My doris has a Lumia 820.

My s3 is not as good since 4.3 went on it- very laggy. Fortunately contract expires soon.
I have factory reset the thing twice since 4.3 was installed, but still not as good as when I had 4.1.

  5. Bond James says

If s3 does not get the update then this will be my last SAMSUNG phone ever
P.S. Dear Samsung I will update to 4.4 anyways thanks to rooting.

  8. Kashif says

I recently got my S4 updated with kitkat and started to face trouble with my new software. specially while I try to unlock the screen it takes around 1 minute to unlock. In general much slower than before :(

  9. Greg says

Galaxy S3- mine is not 2 years old, yet will have been effectively binned by Samsung if no more official updates. I don’t really like iphones, but they sure keep their value. My S3 was over £500 new,- will be lucky to get £100, after just 24 months. Samsung can shove their phones where the sun will never shine.
