Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 Updates Not a Done Deal

The Samsung Galaxy S3 and Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat update situation just got a little murkier today, thanks to comments made by a regional arm of Samsung.

Earlier this week, Samsung Arabia boldly proclaimed that the Galaxy S3 GT-i9300, the international variant with 1GB of RAM, would be getting the Android 4.4 KitKat update before the end of March. The confirmation came weeks after Samsung Poland said that it would not be updating the Galaxy S3 due to concerns about the 1GB of RAM on board.

From the beginning, we had a feeling that Samsung Arabia’s information was off. SamMobile, a site that regularly leaks Android updates, claimed that it hadn’t seen the update on Samsung’s servers. Samsung’s regional wings have also been wrong about Android updates in the past, one reason why we constantly tell device owners to stop asking questions of them.

It appears that our suspicions were correct. Samsung Arabia, in response to another question about the GT-i9300 Android 4.4 KitKat update, now says that it currently has no plans to update the model to Android 4.4. This is a far cry from a March release date. The situation gets even murkier than that.

The regional arm also says that it currently has no plans to upgrade the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 to Android 4.4 KitKat. The Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat update was confirmed by Samsung USA and Sprint and also by Samsung Poland. The Galaxy Note 2 features 2GB of RAM which means that there is a good chance it will get upgraded to Android 4.4.

So while the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat updates are heading to the United States, and at least one carrier in Australia, they are not a done deal for some users. At least not yet.

Despite the comments from Samsung Arabia, we do expect the Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat update to land in that part of the world. Everything we’ve seen points to a global release. However, the Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 KitKat update situation is far less stable and there is certainly a chance that Samsung will skip an update for the international model.

While information is certainly trending towards Samsung skipping an update for the 1GB version of the Galaxy S3, nothing is set in stone until Samsung itself makes it official. It will do that either by announcing the bad news or completely skipping over the 1GB versions of the device.

Both the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat updates are expected to based primarily on features from Google, not Samsung. Carriers will likely put their own spin on the updates by adding unique enhancements and fixes.
