The Nexus 5 isn’t going anywhere soon but that doesn’t mean that we’re not already hearing details about its possible successor, a successor that is being dubbed the Nexus 5. New Nexus 6 details have leaked again today and if information is spot on, it looks like this year’s Nexus could be Google’s last.
On Halloween, Google announced the Nexus 5 alongside the Android 4.4 KitKat update. It replaced the Nexus 4, the company’s fourth-generation Nexus smartphone. Shortly after the announcement, the Nexus 5 and the new update were out on shelves, beckoning consumers to the Google Play Store.
The Nexus 5 remains on shelves but rumors suggest that it will be replaced at some point later this year by a brand new Nexus 6 that’s based on the LG G3, a device that was confirmed for arrival in the second quarter of this year. Rumors suggest that the Nexus 6 will be a watered down version of LG’s next flagship and that it will come at some point during the second half of the year.
Android head Sundar Pichai confirmed that the device would arrive in the second half of the year though he declined to offer a specific date. Google’s Nexus smartphones typically arrive in October before being released in November ahead of the holiday shopping season.
Nexus 6 rumors continue to heat up and today, a pair of reports detail some new information. Android Geeks, a credible source, claims that the Nexus 6 will, again, be based on the LG G3 that will arrive in the weeks ahead. The publication says that the Nexus 6 will also come with a fingerprint sensor, a feature that arrived on last year’s iPhone 5s and debuted on Samsung’s Galaxy S5 earlier this year.
Details about the sensor aren’t specific so it’s unclear how Google and its Nexus 6 manufacturer, said to be LG, will implement the technology into the new Nexus. If Google does embed a fingerprint sensor inside the Nexus 6, it would not only provide added security to Nexus users but it would also provide added convenience.
A new report from The Information suggests that Google will kill off the Nexus brand in 2015 meaning the Nexus 6 may be the last Nexus-branded smartphone to come out of Google. The report follows an earlier report from Android Police that stated that Google was working on a project called Android Silver.
The new information suggests that Android Silver will be aimed at the high-end market and will be targeting Apple’s iPhone, one of the market’s premium devices. The Android Silver program will reportedly be open to several manufacturers. However, it looks like the Android Silver program and the Nexus line will not co-exist. This lines up with what Russian blogger Eldar Murtazin said earlier this year.
According to the intel, devices that fall under the Android Silver umbrella will get quick software updates, will offer high-end hardware, and will launch in the United States, Germany and Japan sometime next year. The report also suggests that Google will pump in its own money to market these devices and ensure that they get the attention they need.
At the moment, it’s not clear which companies will be taking part in the program though LG and Motorola are said to be possible candidates. LG is a close partner of Google’s and developed both the Nexus 4 and the Nexus 5. It’s also widely expected to be the developer behind the upcoming Nexus 6.
While Android Silver could be the end of the Nexus program, it looks like Google will keep many of the features that are hallmarks of Nexus devices including quick software updates, high-end hardware and big name manufacturers. It’s not clear if the Android Silver devices will keep the cheap unlocked price tags that come with Nexus smartphones or tablets or if they will fall in line with Google’s more expensive Google Play Edition lineup.
If the Nexus 6 is the last Nexus smartphone, there is a chance it could send the program off with a bang. The LG G3 is expected to be a top flight smartphone featuring a handful of high-powered features.
LG G3 will sport a 5.5-inch 2560 x 1440 quad HD resolution display, but will come with thin bezels to keep the overall device size down. Rumors claim the LG G3 won’t be any bigger in size than the LG G2, but be much improved in all areas, including the display. It’s still not clear exactly when LG will be announcing the LG G3 but it looks like consumers may not have to wait long for LG’s Galaxy S5 competitor to arrive.
The latest rumors suggest a late May unveil with the LG G3 being released globally sometime in mid-to-late June. If true, it means that the LG G3 will arrive much sooner than last year’s LG G2. The LG G2 launched much later in the year and its launch clashed with the September launch of the iPhone 5s.
