Nexus 7 Deal Offers Massive Price Cut
With Nexus 8 rumors pointing to a release late in the year, Google’s Nexus 7 remains a viable option for those that want a solid tablet at a solid price. And while the price on the Google Play Store is certainly a tempting offer, a new Nexus 7 deal knocks a full $100 off the retail price making it a tempting proposition for those looking for a brand new tablet.
Its been a year since Google took to the stage in San Francisco and announced its Nexus 7, Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update and the Chromecast. And in that year, we’ve seen a new Nexus 5 smartphone, several Android 4.4 KitKat updates, and the new Android L update. However, we still haven’t seen Google replace the Nexus 7.
Thanks to solid hardware including a full HD display and sleek black matte design, updated software, and a flurry of enticing deals, the Nexus 7 remains a top choice and a device worth considering in the month of July.
Today’s Nexus 7 deal comes from eBay and it knocks a full $100 off the price tag of the Nexus 7. Google’s Nexus 7 typically retails for $230 but this price drop means that it’s available, right now, for a mere $130. That’s more than $200 cheaper than the price of the iPad mini with Retina Display, Apple’s 7.9-inch slate that runs consumers $399.99.
The deal also comes with free shipping but there are a few things that consumers need to keep in mind before taking the plunge with Google’s current Nexus tablet. First, this is a refurbished device. The listing says that its “re-certified by Asus and packaged in an Asus factory sealed brown box and comes with a Asus 90-Day Warranty.” Essentially, the Nexus 7 will look and feel new but it won’t be new.
The other is that rumors suggest that Google will be introducing a brand new Nexus 8 to the world at some point later this year. The device is expected to debut alongside the Android L update, the update that Google showed off for the first time at Google I/O 2014 and an update that is currently available in beta form to Nexus 7 users.
We’ve seen rumors pinpoint Nexus 8 features ahead of launch. Nexus 8 rumors currently point to a high-end device with a zero-gap aluminum unibody design similar to the HTC One, an 8.9-inch 2048 x 1440 full HD display with a 4:3 aspect ratio, 4G LTE, 64-bit NVIDIA Logan 64-bit processor (Tegra K1), 8MP rear camera with Optical Image Stabilization, and a 3MP front-facing camera for video chatting.
The Nexus 8 release date remains out of reach though Android L release rumors put the update in October, November or December, Google’s usual Nexus smartphone release window. With a Nexus smartphone rumored to be out for 2014, it’s possible that the company will instead slot the Nexus 8 in ahead of the holiday shopping season. Nexus hardware always launches with new Android software on board.
Maybe most important is that the Nexus 8 is rumored to be more expensive than the Nexus 7’s, perhaps as steep as $399. This would put it on par with the iPad mini with Retina Display.

Of course, Google’s Nexus 8 isn’t the only tablet rumored for the fall. Rumors suggest that Apple has two brand new iPads up its sleeve including an iPad Air 2 and an iPad mini with Retina Display or iPad mini 3. Both are expected to feature incremental upgrades from their predecessors with a focus on an A8 processor, Touch ID fingerprint technology and new rear cameras.
Nexus 7 deals will continue to emerge throughout the year as retailers look to offload the tablet ahead of the holidays and perhaps, ahead of a Nexus 8 or Nexus 9 (it’s being called both) launch.
The iPad mini with Retina Display is arguably the Nexus 7's top competitor thanks to a slew of top notch features and excellent software support courtesy of Apple. Apple's iPad mini with Retina Display is essentially a smaller version of Apple's iPad Air. Instead of a 9.7-inch display, it offers up a smaller 7.9-inch Retina Display with a more compact design. The smaller footprint makes the iPad mini with Retina a much easier device to take on-the-go. Like the iPad Air, the iPad mini with Retina Display comes with an A7 64-bit processor, upgraded camera, and Apple's iOS 7 software. Some models also are capable of connecting to a 4G LTE network for extremely fast connections when Wi-Fi isn't available. It's more expensive than the Nexus 7 but that's the price you have to pay if you want into Apple's ecosystem.
