Published

on

With the iPhone 6 launch date all but confirmed for September 9th, consumers are starting to prepare for the inevitable iPhone 6 release date later this year. Ahead of Apple’s event, we want to take a look at everything we know about the iPhone 6 launch date including what we already know about Apple and the rumors that we’ve seen emerge in recent weeks.

For more than a year, we’ve heard about the new iPhone 6 release that Apple has in store for 2014. Rumors have centered on the name iPhone 6, a probable name for a device that will come after both the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 5, but a name that remains unconfirmed just days before Apple is slated to take the stage in California.

Apple iPhone 6 rumors have stretched far and wide and they’ve left no stone unturned. We’ve heard about the iPhone 6 release date that supposedly could happen in September and perhaps in October as well. Apple, like Samsung, typically does a good job of masking specific release details but rumors point to an arrival in the company’s well known iPhone release window.

We’ve also heard about the ever so important iPhone 6 launch date, or, the date on which Apple will announce the iPhone 6 and perhaps, several other new products. Apple launch dates are important because unlike launch dates for other smarpthones, they typically out every single important detail including release date, price, and more.

With just days to go before the iPhone 6 launch date, we want to take a look at everything we know about the iPhone 6 launch date and the rumors that are hovering over it. These are the key details that prospective buyers will want to keep in mind as we head into the month of September and the iPhone 6 launch date that’s set for September 9th at DeAnza College in Cupertino.

A Bit of History

Before we get to what we know about the iPhone 6 launch date, let’s first discuss what we know about Apple. Apple is known for its straight-forward, well rehearsed iPhone launch events that touch on all of the key points. Price, specs, and release date are all brought up during the company’s media events. And that’s what makes them so important.

We’ve seen Apple keep this setup for a number of years now and while it appears that the company has grand designs for next week’s event, we’re expecting an iPhone launch event that mirrors ones of the past. Look for Apple to talk about more than just its products. Expect it to go into detail about the App Store, about its Retail Stores, and look for it to drop in a few jabs to the face of the competition. This might be Tim Cook’s version of Apple but it’s still Apple.

So, that said, let’s take a look at what the iPhone 6 launch date itself.

iPhone 6 Launch Date

September 9th

In August, Apple sent out media invites beckoning the media to a launch event on September 9th in California. The event, which will be taking place at DeAnza College in the company’s home base of Cupertino, is not confirmed to be the iPhone 6 launch date but the writing is on the wall.

Reports from Re/Code, Bloomberg, and The Wall Street Journal all point to an iPhone 6 launch on September 9th. Gotta Be Mobile has also confirmed that date with our own sources. So while Apple may not be confirming a new iPhone outright, it’s pretty clear that its launch event next week will at least partially be focused on a new iPhone 6.

iPhone 6 Live Stream

When Apple sent out invites to its media event, it did not say whether it would be holding a live stream. Live streams are important because they offer a window to media and Apple enthusiasts that either weren’t invited or can’t make it to the event on Tuesday. And because Apple tends to run down all of the important information ahead of time, live streams are important to the average smartphone shopper as well.

Earlier this week, Apple confirmed our suspicions. There will be a live stream going on September 9th and it will be accessible through Apple’s website per usual. The company is making a pretty big deal out of the live stream this time around as well. There is a counter on the company’s splash page that counts down the seconds to the event.

Apple’s live stream will kick off around 10AM PST and should last anywhere from an hour to two hours. Given how many products are expected at the event, it’s looking like it could be two.

iPhone 6

As we mentioned before, iPhone 6 launch date rumors point to September the 9th and that’s where we think we’ll hear more about Apple’s plans for the iPhone.

iPhone 6 Video Specs

iPhone 6 rumors have been rampant in recent weeks and instead of running down every single detail, we’ll leave you with this detailed rumored iPhone 6 spec sheet that lists off its most important, and rumored features.

It’s important to note that the iPhone 6 is also expected to come with a brand new design that features curved edges, rounded corners and a thinner overall design. There is no more glass on the back of the iPhone 6 according to leaks, instead it is replaced with an all metal back like the HTC One. The iPhone 6’s colors aren’t clear though we suspect that Apple will be keeping the gold around.

iPhone 6 Release Date

We know that Apple likes to announce specific release date details at its iPhone launch events so we should hear all about the iPhone 6 release date during the presentation.

As we’ve closer to September 9th, iPhone 6 rumors have gotten a bit more specific. New information from Chinese micro-blogging site Weibo points to a September 16-19th iPhone 6 release in China that matches with the best estimates and rumors for a U.S. iPhone 6 release as well as one in Germany. Chinese carriers have even started taking pre-orders ahead of the iPhone 6 release date.

Apple Store employees don't know the iPhone 6 release date yet.

Apple traditionally launches in a small set of countries before expanding later to cover more territory. Consumer smartphone preferences in Asia trend towards phones with bigger screens and as we’ve pointed out, this could be why early estimates peg Apple’s iPhone 6 orders as significantly higher than in previous years.

Apple is also known for releasing its iPhone on Friday. The third Friday this month is September 19th, a date that been swirling around for months as the likely release date for the 4.7-inch iPhone 6. Rumors state that the larger 5.5-inch iPhone 6 release date may arrive later on the last Friday in September or even in October.

iPhone 6 Price

September 9th should also produce the iPhone 6 price. As we recently pointed out, the iPhone 6 is expected to command two different price tags with the larger model costing more than the 4.7-inch variant. iPhone 6 price rumors have hovered around $199.99 and $299.99 on contract though both of those remain unconfirmed.

At this point, here is what iPhone 6 price rumors are saying:

  • 4.7-inch iPhone 6 price $100 more than 5.5-inch model, possibly $199.99 on-contract, $650 off-contract.
  • 5.5-inch iPhone 6 price more expensive, perhaps $299.99 on-contract to match Galaxy Note 4, $750 off-c0ntract.

iPhone 6 Carriers

We should also hear about iPhone 6 carriers, both for the U.S. and around the world.

A recent leak shows AT&T is prepped for an iPhone 6 release date in the near future, with multiple iPhone 6 cases listed in inventory. Sprint, along with AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon were first to the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c last year.

Recent plans indicate Verizon is almost ready to turn on VoLTE, a new technology that can deliver better phone calls and the ability to talk and use data at the same time. VoLTE support is rumored in iOS 8 for the iPhone 6 and possibly the iPhone 5s though it remains unconfirmed despite the presence of Apple’s iOS 8 beta update.

T-Mobile will also be hosting an UnCarrier 7.0 event on September 10th. The timing is suspicious given the close proximity of the iPhone event so it’s possible that it will have some sort of a tie-in.

iWatch

The iPhone 6 may not be alone. Several reports point to the arrival of Apple’s first wearable alongside the iPhone 6 on September 9th. iWatch launch rumors have been floating around for years but this appears to be it. There’s a ton of smoke and typically when there’s a ton of smoke, there is a ton of fire. The iWatch launch date looks good for September 9th.

iWatch concept.

Well respected KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says that Apple’s iWatch will come with 8GB of internal storage with 512MB of memory. Kuo also notes that the iWatch’s display will come in two different sizes, the smaller one featuring a 1.3-inch screen and the larger of the two with a 1.5-inch display. Rumors point to it running a modified version of iOS 8 with a NFC aboard for mobile payments.

It appears that Apple employees are setting low expectations for battery life, an Achilles heel of other wearable products including the brand new Moto 360 from Motorola.

iWatch Release Date

If Apple does announce the iWatch, we can expect it to release details about its upcoming release. iWatch release date rumors point to a delayed release, perhaps in 2015. The new rumors come from Recode and they mirror earlier iWatch rumors. Early rumors suggested that Apple’s wearable device would release in early 2015 with production beginning on November most likely.

iOS 8

We know that Apple likes to show off its finish iOS update next to its finished iPhone and with an iPhone release slated for a few weeks from now, it makes sense that we’d hear all about the iOS 8 update that’s been in beta since June and should be coming on board the iPhone 6.

iOS 8 will replace the company’s iOS 7 update for a number of iPhones and iPads. Apple will almost certainly recap its big features on stage and perhaps, announce some that it hasn’t shown off yet.

iOS 8 Release Date

With an iOS 8 update poised to exit beta, we know that there’s a good chance Apple will announce the highly anticipated iOS 8 release date at the iPhone 6 launch event. iOS 8 release date rumors are scarce though the company is famous for releasing its new iOS updates a few days before the arrival of the new iPhone.

The iPhone 6 release date is rumored for Friday which means that Wednesday September 17th is as good of a date as any for the iOS 8 release date for iPhone and iPad.

iPad Air 2

Finally, we know that there’s a chance the iPad Air 2 could join the iPhone 6, iWatch and iOS 8 on September 9th. Well-connected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed months ago that the iPad Air 2 release could come earlier this year. Last year’s iPad Air was announced in October and released in November ahead of the holiday.

The latest leak shows a possible new iPad Air 2 design that matches some iPhone 6 leaks.

Kuo now says that he believes Apple will announce the iPad Air 2 on September 9th alongside the iPhone 6. The iPad Air 2 is rumored to feature an A8 processor, Touch ID, 8MP rear camera, and an anti-reflective display. A recent report from Digitimes claims that the iPad Air 2 will be thinner than the original model.

While it might be announced in September, Kuo believes that the iPad Air 2 release date will come in October rather than in Novemeber.
