Apple announced two new iPhones this month with large screens that left potential buyers wondering if the iPhone 6 fits in a pocket. And users looking for the biggest screen Apple offers on an iPhone want to know if the iPhone 6 plus fit in a pocket.
Thankfully we have an iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus mockup that matches the new iPhone measurements, and we have pockets so we can test this for you.
The height and width of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus we use for this test match exactly, the dummy units are just a bit thicker.
We’ll share our results and then let you know what you can use to test the size of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in your own pockets.
For this experiment we are testing the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in the front pocket of a mens jeans and in the front and back pocket of a pair of women’s jeans. If you wear skinny jeans or need to test in a uniform or special outfit we share some samples that will help you check the fit.
iPhone 6 & iPhone 6 Plus Pocket Test
In the short video below you can see how the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus fit in a pocket. if you are a guy, you probably won’t have any trouble even with the larger iPhone 6 Plus, but in our test the two new iPhones are rather big for pockets on a pair of women’s jeans.
The iPhone 6 features a 4.7-inch display and the iPhone 6 Plus a 5.5-inch display. The larger display means a larger phone, which is in turn harder to fit in small pockets.
Ladies will see the brunt of this issue with dress pants and jeans designed with pockets large enough to carry a half-dollar, but not much else. In our test the iPhone 5s already sticks out of the pocket slightly, the iPhone 6 is poking out even more and the iPhone 6 Plus may not even fit in the pocket of some jeans.
If you wear jeans with shallow pockets the iPhone 6 is probably OK, but the iPhone 6 Plus is not pocket friendly for several pairs of women’s jeans and work pants we tested.
The best way to try this yourself is to use a phone that is almost the same size as the iPhone 6 Plus and iPhone 6, or to print out paper version that you can put in your pocket.
If you can comfortably fit the Galaxy Note 3 in your pocket, the iPhone 6 Plus will work. These phones are not the same size, but they are close enough for a test if you know someone with the Galaxy Note 3.
For users looking to try the iPhone 6 in a pocket, grab a Galaxy S4 and see if you can carry it in your pockets. This is not exactly the same size, but again it is close enough to test your pockets.
Another option is to download and print an iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus size test PDF from GadgetHacks. Print this at 100% size and then cut the mock ups out and place them in your pocket. Obviously this won’t give you the same thickness as the iPhone 6 Plus or iPhone 6, but width and height are the big concerns.
