Earlier this month reports surfaced that Motorola and Verizon would announce and release a new DROID smartphone inside the month of October, and that looks to be accurate. While we’re not sure if the announcement and release date will be on the same day, Verizon’s confirmed October 28th is the official unveiling.

Thanks to some newly leaked marketing material we now have new photos shown above (and below) of the new smartphone, as well as confirmations regarding the specs. The DROID Turbo sounds like one of the best smartphones of 2014, beating nearly everything else in its category across the board, but certainly isn’t the prettiest phone we’ve ever seen.

Carrying over some of the designs of the previous DROID phones, adding in features from the new Moto X (2014) and topping it off with a stunning screen, camera, and huge battery this phone will pack quite the punch, and last for days. Here’s the full specs, which have been confirmed more than a few times.

DROID Turbo Specs

  • 5.2-inch 2560 x 1440 Quad-HD display
  • 2.7 GHz Snapdragon 805 Quad-core processor with 3GB of RAM
  • 32GB storage
  • Android 4.4.4 KitKat (nearly stock)
  • 21 Megapixel Rear and 2.1 front camera setup
  • 4k video recording
  • Front facing speaker
  • 3,900 mAh battery (wireless charging)
  • Turbo Charger Support
  • Water repellent (coating guards against everyday spills and up to 20 minutes in a downpour), scratch resistant
  • More

Verizon’s new DROID Turbo will have a bright and sharp 2560 x 1440 Quad-HD display like the Galaxy Note 4 and LG G3, but pack the most pixels and the clearest display by being only 5.2-inches in size. They’ve added a 21 megapixel camera and a huge 3,900 mAh battery promising over 48 hours of usage.

The Turbo in the name is party due to the fast processor and stunning specs, but also for the Turbo Charger that will come in the box. Using Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 technology and a new Motorola Turbo Charger, the phone can get up to 8 hours of usage after just 15 minutes on the charger. Add in wireless charging, and this phone will have plenty of ways to get power, and last for days.

All the leaks and material confirm two colors will be available which are metallic black and red, but we’re only expecting one DROID smartphone this year, vs 3 that arrives in 2013.

Motorola’s new Verizon DROID Turbo will run a nearly stock version of Android 4.4.4 KitKat, and have the entire Motorola suite off apps we enjoyed in out Moto X (2014) Review. Those being Moto Voice, Display, Actions, and Assist. Most likely owners can expect an update to Android L in the near future too, as we’re hearing that will officially be released November 3rd, and Motorola’s been one of the best when it comes to software updates as of late.

Again, all the details above have been confirmed by leaked benchmarks and some official marketing material, so all we need now is the price and an official release date. We’ll be learning more once the phone makes an official debut live in New York City on October 28th. Stay tuned for more details!
