How to Save an iPhone 6 from Water Damage

Published

on

When you accidentally drop your iPhone 6, iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus in water you can still save it. Whether it’s in the sink, toilet or pool, we’ll show you how you can recover from most iPhone 6 or iPhone 6s water damage problems.

The iPhone 6 is not waterproof and even though the iPhone 6s can handle water better, it is not waterproof either unless you put a case on it.

The iPhone 7 is water-resistant, but if you have one of these older models you’ll need to be careful when using the iPhone around water or humidity.

Even a short drop into a sink, pool or toilet is enough to cause iPhone 6 water damage, but you can take immediate action to save your iPhone 6 or iPhone 6s from water damage.

How you can save your iPhone 6 or iPhone 6s from water damage.

How you can save your iPhone 6 or iPhone 6s from water damage.

It is imperative that you take quick action to dry the iPhone 6s to save it from a complete failure. Keep in mind that even minimal exposure to water can completely break the iPhone. Small water sensors in the iPhone indicate that it has been exposed to water, so Apple or your carrier will know if you take it to them.

Use these tips and tested tricks to recover from iPhone 6 water damage, even if it went completely underwater. These will also work on the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. You may have better luck on these models since there is a new seal to prevent water damage.

First Steps After Dropping iPhone in Water

As soon as you realize that your iPhone 6 or iPhone 6s is in the water you need to start acting. After you remove it from water you need to do as much as you can to remove water from your phone. The same holds true for coffee, soda, and alcohol — but keep in mind the sugar and other chemicals in these can cause more damage than water alone.

This is what to do immediately after taking your iPhone out of the water if you want it to have a better chance at surviving with minimal water damage. Even before you leave it alone to dry, make sure you take these steps.

Shut It Down: There is a very good chance that your iPhone 6 or iPhone 6s is still working after you remove it from water. Even if it is, the first thing you need to do is turn it off. You don’t want electricity and water to mix and fry something.

Open All Ports: If your iPhone 6 or iPhone 6s is in a case, open it. Remove any cords, headphones and even the SIM card tray on the side. If you don’t have a SIM card removal tool, most earring studs will also work, as will some paperclips or thumbtacks. You want to make sure water can freely flow out of the iPhone.

Save your iPhone 6 or iPhone 6s from water damage by opening up all ports and holes.

Save your iPhone 6 or iPhone 6s from water damage by opening up all ports and holes.

Empty Water Out: Now is the time to make sure you get as much water out of your iPhone as possible. You can shake the iPhone and you can blow into the iPhone openings. You can also try compressed air or a blow dryer on cool. Try to blow so that you don’t shoot water back into the iPhone. You can also try using a wet/dry vacuum to suck the water out.

If you want to go the extra mile, you can try taking your iPhone 6 or iPhone 6s apart. Unless you have AppleCare+ or another extended warranty or insurance the phone standard warranty is already void. If you have a warranty you may want to skip this step. If you don’t and you are brave enough, check out these guides to take the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s apart.

Don’t Put Your iPhone 6s in Rice

One of the go to options to save a water damaged iPhone is to put it in rice, but that’s not really going to help you much. There are better options out there that will save your iPhone. One of the biggest things to remember is not to charge the iPhone or turn it on for at least 24 hours.

The video above explains why rice isn’t the right solution for iPhone 6s water damage. It also walks though what a repair shop like iOutlet will do to fix iPhone water damage if you bring it in. iOutlet recommends seeking help as soon as possible.

Skip rice and go for silica gel or open air to dry your iPhone 6 or iPhone 6s out.

Skip rice and go for silica gel or open air to dry your iPhone 6 or iPhone 6s out.

If you want to put your iPhone 6 or iPhone 6s in something to remove the moisture you should try silica gel or one of the special packs that companies sell to absorb water from your iPhone.

Read: Best Waterproof Smartphones in 2017

You can find Silica gel packets around your house or even at a local shoe or department store. If you can’t find those, look for an object like Kensington EVAP which is available for as little as $8.

Some hardware stores sell a product called DampRid, which you can put in a sealed bag with your iPhone for 24 hours to suck the moisture out of it.

There are a lot of options to use to dry your water damaged iPhone 6 or iPhone 6s, but you don’t want to get it too hot. Apple warns not to exceed 113 degrees Fahrenheit. That means you shouldn’t leave it in a car in the sun, put it in an oven or use a blow dryer on hot.

In fact, Gazelle suggests leaving your iPhone out in the open air in a warm well-circulated location. If you set the iPhone on a counter or bookshelf at home and leave it alone for 24 hours, you have a very good chance of it surviving the exposure.

What to Do After Your iPhone is in Water

After you follow all the steps above, you need to leave your iPhone 6 or iPhone 6s sit in the silica gel or on the counter without turning it on or charging it for at least 24 hours.

After you wait 24 to 36 hours you can try turning the iPhone 6 or iPhone 6s back on. Before you do this shake the phone a little to feel for water and listen for any water. If you hear or feel anything you need to keep waiting.

If the iPhone 6 or iPhone 6s doesn’t turn on you may need to charge it for several hours. Just to be safe charge it using an adapter, not plugged into your computer in case there is still water.

Don't turn your iPhone on until at least 24 hours later.

Don’t turn your iPhone on until at least 24 hours later.

Assuming charging the iPhone doesn’t work, you may need to take it to a repair shop. If the iPhone turns on when connected to power, but won’t hold a charge you may need a new battery. If that is the case, plugging it in to your computer and turning it on could help you back up one last time.

At this point, if the iPhone 6 or iPhone 6s will not turn on, you may need to head to an Apple Store. Even without AppleCare+, you can pay for an out of warranty replacement that is much cheaper than buying a new iPhone off contract.

Although not as nice as fixing your water damaged iPhone 6s or iPhone 6, you can pay as little as $299 for a replacement.

  • iPhone 6s Plus – $329
  • iPhone 6s – $299
  • iPhone 6 Plus – $329
  • iPhone 6 – $299

If you have an iPhone SE, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5C or iPhone 5 the cost is $269. This all assumes you don’t have a warranty that covers water damage.

You can also check local repair shops that may charge as little as $99 to fix the iPhone water damage, and some offer a no fix, no fee repair service.

What to Do With a Water Damaged iPhone 6s or iPhone 6

Even if you need to spend money on a new iPhone 6 or iPhone 6s, you can still get some money for a broken or water damaged iPhone 6 or iPhone 6s.

Gazelle pays $50 for a broken iPhone 6 that doesn’t turn on, and $100 if it does turn on.

Gazelle pays $75 for a broken iPhone 6s that doesn’t turn on, and $125 if it does turn on.

You can use that to help pay for an out of warranty replacement for your water damaged iPhone.

Thank you for the tips. Opening with the three steps (especially #1) would have made them even better – unfortunately my phone short circuited while i was reading through all the other info. Crossing my fingers anyway for a positive outcome.

I did the 1 second accidental toilet drop. Thank god it was just water. I did everything I shouldnt. I didn’t turn it off, and placed it in a baggy of rice. Everything worked at first, except I could not hear the phone when I held it up to my ear. I could only hear using the speakerphone. After 6 hours in rice, everything worked as before. However, I could not get my lightning connector into the bottom of the phone. I made an appointment at the Genius Bar, and he found a piece of rice lodged. 30 seconds of digging, and all was perfect. I will follow your recommendations in the future should I (God forbid) do this again.

Cathy, your comment saved me time and money and a trip to the dreded, over-crowded Apple store!! That’s exactly what was wrong with my phone too…..a grain of rice was lodged! Thank you!!!

Did the few second toilet drop with my new iPhone 6, thankfully it was clean water. Got it out immediately & turned it off. Took it out of the otter box as quickly as possible. Shook out as much water as I could & took a paper towel rolled up real small & put it in all the openings I could get to. Got it in a bag of rice as soon as I could, I was at work. When I got home, I put it in a Baggie with about 8 silica pks. Left it overnight. After 8 hrs with the silica, I set it in front of a heater with a fan–about 3 ft away so the warm air was just barely hitting it, kept turning it do all of the ports would be towards the heater, did that for about six hrs. Called Apple told them what happened, Apple tech told me to power it on, it had been 27 hrs by this time. It powered on & so far so good, it’s been 18 days now with no problems so far. Keeping fingers crossed & praying for my phone!

Dropped my iPhone 6 in toilet and was an hours away from home. Tried numerous times to turn it on, lit up red then pink then lines throughout the screen them would not turn on at all. Went to ATT store to see it they could help, the guy plugged my phone up and nothing. Said not much hope for it. On the way home I ask God to please let my phone not be ruined. Got home stuck in a bag of rice at 5:00 in the evening, left it there until 4:30 the next day. Plugged it up, charger light came on, soon I was receiving text messages. My phone works perfectly, thank God!

The wifi and cellular antenna has corrosion built up on it due to the water. Take it in or clean it yourself (YouTube tutorial on disassembling an iPhone 6) with rubbing alcohol. After doing this it should work just fine.

With my luck I decided to wash my sheets with my new iphone 6. It was in the wash for about 5 minutes before I realized it was missing. I was told to immediately dry it off and turn the phone off. But it will not turn off…its in a bag of rice as of now. Is there anything that I should do since it was in soapy water? Hoping it’ll turn on in a week or so:/

I went kayaking this morning, got tripped up getting out and my iPhone 6 fell into the salt water. immediately grabbed phone and took the cover off, wiped it dry and shook excess water out, as much as I could. left it on the dash to dry on my drive home then stuck it out on the balcony in the sun to continue to dry. I will leave it out in the sun as long as I came and see if it saves it. I paid a lot of money for this phone and would hate to lose everything on it. we’ll see what happens next.

I Dropped my new Iphone 6 in the toilet, it must have only been in there for 10 – 15 secs. Anyway got it straight out and wipped with tissue paper and rolled it up and pushed it in all the openings. It turned itself off after about 15 mins. I have kept it in rice now for 2 days, it will turn on, and work as normal (so far) but my home button is not working. Please can anyone help???

    • Denali

      06/01/2016 at 7:59 pm

hey so this happened to my friend Isa, multiple times, and her home button doesn’t work either. you should, as Mimi said, turn on assistive touch. Isa’s phone’s home button still doesn’t work and its been months, so hers probably won’t work, but yours might. assistive touch is a good option and that’s about all i can think of.

I dropped mine in the toilet and the speakers won’t work!!!!! The phone works fine. But I need to know, will the speakers eventually be able to function again??? I’m about to go away on a trip for the weekend. Fml.

    • Marie

      10/14/2015 at 4:44 am

Yes, please, I’d also like to know! The same thing happened to me this morning. It was only there for a couple of seconds and looked dry and seemed to work properly, so I dried the exterior and off I went. But now, I realize the speaker doesn’t work (as for some other people, works if I put earphones). It then occurred to me to look in the holes and… the hole for the earphones was full with a bluish liquid. Dried it off with a Qtip and turned the phone off. Now I’m wondering if it worked again for anyone? If not, is it fixable? I really, really hope I didn’t ruin my phone… By the way, never, EVER leave your phone in your pocket when you go to the toilet. Just too risky.

My 6-day old iPhone 6 was on my ATV and instead of carrying it on me while we road thru the creek over the 4th of July weekend at our remote cabin, I thought it best to put it in the cute little compartment of my brand new ATV. Well, I didn’t hug the side the creek where I should have and it all went under water. Needless to say, ATV is not dry yet and neither is my new iPhone 6. I had it in rice a full day and then in oven at 70-90 degrees for 2 hours; then back in the rice for another day. It’s currently sitting in a warm dry place to further dry out. Removed sim card yesterday and will give it a try in a couple of days. I’m so bummed. No insurance and my new otter box arrived at home on my porch about 120 miles away and a few hours after it was submerged. Note to self, get the insurance on the iphone. The minuscule amount of it is worth it.

Not about my iPhone 6 (hopefully I won’t have a story like this to tell) but I did drop my ipod 5th gen in a glass of iced tea at a restaurant while showing my dad a photo. thought he had it in his hands, but turns out he didn’t. really frustrating not knowing what to do especially in a public place especially since this was a time period where i was in between switching phones thus only having iMessage to rely on. went straight to the ladies’ room and used small bits of rolled paper towel to soak up any extra water and then had it under the handdryer for about 3 minutes. didn’t turn it off like a dumb dumb but it still works today, even after dropping it in a pot of hot water (wtf) and doing the same thing. however, it did turn off immediately the second time.

My little guy took my iPhone 6 for a little swim a week ago today. I had left it out as suggested and today finally tried to turn it on. No luck, I plugged it in and got the magical red battery icon. I thought there was hope, turned it on and it turns on! I dropped the top quarter portion of my iPhone into the sink while brushing my teeth..(I have had this phone for two weeks, one week ago a hairline crack somehow appeared on my screen while I was sleeping, but that was replaced for free, and now this) the screen looks fine, just like it normally would except it is unresponsive. I left it on for about ten minutes thinking it was just a wet screen. I couldn’t turn the phone off because of the unresponsive screen, so I had to hard reset it a few times before it would stay off. I then shook the phone trying to get out as much water as possible, got a blow dryer and blew into the opening for about five minutes and it is now submerged in a bowl of brown rice.

I am really hoping my phone will work again, hardly any of the phone was in the water and it wasn’t even the bottom, where all of the openings are.
Do you think my iPhone will survive, and can you provide me with any tips please?
Thank you in advance, anything helps.

Dropped my iphone 6 in the tub tonight… hot bubble bath water. I was selecting music to listen to, then it slipped out of my hands and the music turned off. Took it out immediately, dried it, took it out of the case, and tried to turn it off but it kept glitching and wouldn’t turn off. I went and grabbed a bowl full of rice to put it in for a few minutes and the sound came on again. It started working fine, and then out of nowhere the screen turned blue and it shut off. I haven’t been able to get it back on since. It has only been an hour but I’m really hoping some time will do the trick.

I too had a very similar thing happen! So I instantly took out the SIM card and put the phone and card in the rice for 24 hrs. Then I read that wasn’t the best thing to do instead just leave it out to air dry on its own. Leaving it off and the SIM card out. I did this for another 24 hours. Then I put it together turned it on and I’m using it perfectly fine right now! Lesson learned don’t try and pick music while going in or near your pool or Tub in your case! Good luck!

Went for a late night swim, a very late night swim after cleaning the pool took a dip for about 10 minutes, the moment I jumped out of the pool, I felt the weight of my iPhone 6 PLus leaning against my leg, “you can’t scream F#%# in my neighborhood at 3 in the morning. Ran in side, constantly cursing my pool, placed my phone under a fan. Fingers and toes are crossed.

ok this is real bad and embarassing.. i was soaking my feet in a solution..fell asleep and when i woke up an hour later phone was in the foot tub. Was in a lifeproof case and was still on. I took case off put blowdryer to it and didnt turn in off. Was working fine except for screen has obvious water damage. I can still see all things and continued working. I shut it off and put it in air tight bag of rice. Do i have hope? The opening to charger was not closed totally or the opening to where you plug earphones in.

I accidentally dropped my iphone 6 in the river. Immediately took it out and tried my best to dry everything out. I noticed the apps on the phone would open up and closed it. Siri wasn’t working and fingerprint detection was gone. Went home and backup as much as I can before the phone dies. After backing up everything, the phone works intermittently. But I noticed Siri was acting up even though I didn’t ask anything. Then the phone went completely white and I couldn’t turn off or turn on. The next day, I charged the phone up and noticed that I can see the screen very blurry and flickering. The flickering was going on for few hours before everything was back to normal. Thanks goodness, I didn’t have to replace it.

I was on holiday when I decided to take my iPhone 6 for a swim in the pool with its lifeproofcase on. (Which I have done before and the phone was fine) and when I got out I took it out of the case to make sure no water got in and it was damp at the back and wasn’t turned on, so I turned it on and it just had the apple sign on for about 13 minitues, so then I pressed the home and turn off button and the phone never turned back on. Sadly there was no wifi where I was staying and couldn’t use 4G because phone is dead and couldn’t look up what to do and ended up doing everything I shouldn’t have done. Charged it, kept trying to turn it on and left it in the burning sun. It’s been a week and 2 days since that happened can I still fix it?

Sadly I dropped my phone in the bath for a couple of seconds when bathing my son. I followed all of the above steps… It turns on and works well. However I cannot connect to bluetooth and my location on apple and google maps is incorrect. I have reset and reloaded all of my software… but still having connectivity issues.

Hello! I accidentally dropped my iPhone 6 plus in the toilet today. I quickly got it out and dried it off frantically. After sanitizing it carefully, the phone functions as normal, only it will open apps and attempt to delete apps without me touching anything. I turned the phone off, and I am praying that it will work fine here in a few. Charges and functions properly, but seems to have a mind of it’s own. My mother, whom works at Verizon, claims it’s gone for good, but I’m really hoping she’s wrong.

Bit of a result. iPhone 6 wasn’t insured when I dropped it down the toilet and it ceased to work. Took it to the Genius bar to see if there was anything they could do and the guy gave me a replacement one for free!!! I suggest doing the same, they can only say no.

I washed my iPhone 6 in the washer with detergent for an entire 45 minute cycle today while I napped with my baby. I thought it was still in the diaper bag, not in my pants pocket that I threw in the wash. My husband wants to kill me! It will not do absolutely anything but vibrate and it is not on. It is in a bag of rice. Fingers crossed…

Hello i dropped my phone in the washer as well. It was was in there for about three minutes until i eventually found it. I shook out all the water i could, and attempted to turn it on only once (but it didn’t turn on). After much research, it is now been sitting in oatmeal for about 16 hours or so. What should i do next?

I dropped my iphone 6 in the toilet! I PANICKED.It was in the water for about 10-15 seconds.. I took it out and dried it off with a towel. It was stupid of me but i pressed all the buttons waiting for a response (I had no idea you weren’t supposed to do that) Lines started appearing and it went all black. i quickly shaked my phone so that the water could come out and then left it in my bed to dry out. Now its been in rice for 5 hours and im going to leave it for 1 more day, now i just gotta pray for my phone.. IS IT GOING TO WORK? What were your experiences with this

I went to the snow and had my phone in my pocket. Turned out my jacket wasn’t very waterproof near the pocket area so my iPhone got damp. I turned it off and air dried it for a few hours. Now, the only problem is the sound switch. The sound now randomly turns on and then on silent. It even does this sometimes while I’m speaking on the phone. Is there a way I could fix this?

I went to the pool with my kiddos but never notice the iphone6 was in my side pocket. I swam for about 30minutes and left for shower. Just then i noticed it.. I followed the rice method for 48 hrs but no success. My uncle who work as cp technician opened it up and dried completely the internals using hair dryer. Tried charging and still no success. So I went to apple service center but the only thing they can do is to recover all my data. The phone according to them was irreparable because the motherboard got damaged.! In short they offered me a discounted price for the replacement unit, but still quite expensive ( 18000 php vs 3200ophp ).

Any chance to make it work? Can someone tell me where to buy motherboard here in the Philippines?

true story, My husband is a construction worker on a barge over a harbor of a river. His IPHONE 6 was in an otterbox (non waterproof) his clip popped and it went down in the river. Stayed there overnight till they pumped the area where his iphone dropped. A friend jumped in the river bed to get it. 48 hrs later it is working after not touching it and leaving it in rice. Only thing is the battery doesn’t hold a charge for more than 4 hrs. otherwise it is working perfectly!

My son dropped my iPhone 6+ in the toilet and brought it to me, it was literally soaked. The screen was turning black and all of a sudden it turned off, tried turning it on again but it was no use.Took of the case, I shaked some of the water out, then looked on line & I used a “Vacuum cleaner” and suction all the water out after a good 10 minutes, it’s sitting in a container full of rice. Hopefully it works….

Dropped my phone in the toilet by accident today for what seemed like two seconds. I wiped it off immediately, turned it off and shook as much water out as I could. It is sitting in a bag of rice for now, however, it keeps flashing the apple logo on and off. I plugged it in to the charger (as I hadn’t seen this forum beforehand) and it appeared to be working okay, minus the lock button and the upper volume button. Turned it back off and put it back into the bag of rice to stay overnight. The apple logo keeps flashing…I’m hoping it’s not going to be toast…I’m a starving student who can’t afford to replace it!!!!

    Hello Everyone,

I just want to THANK YOU for this post. Like many of you my iPhone 6 fell in the toilet and as quick as it fell-I scooped it out of the water. Thank you so much!!!!

Well I hope u can help me with this. I was cleaning a dish and I got water on my screan. Didn’t think anything of it and just whipped off the screan. Then my phone died and I plugged it in and saw a big blue patch at the corner of my screan. I thought it was my charger so I unplugged it and it was sti there so I took my case off and water had gotten under my case. I whipped it off and then my phone shut off. It’s been 2 days of having it sit in rice and when we try to plug it in it won’t come on. What do I do???

The rice does not work on the IPhones because you will need to take the battery out.. Also my phone also had a blue screen and when I called apple the stated “Once you open the back exposing the battery pack your insurance (if you have) would not exist because we have no control of broken parts that cannot be salvaged from the back”..

Douche pushed me into the pool. Was pulling phone out of my pocket as i fell in. Phone was in water for about 3 seconds. Prior to falling in my phone was dead. I 5 minutes later tried turning my phone on before doing anything and it came on, then shut off. It has been in rice ever since. Took it out of rice to see if it would work. The battery charge screen came up then went away. Its back in rice now, anyone know if its going to come on?

I have an iPhone 6s and accidentally dropped it in the toilet, it was in the toilet for no more than three seconds. I dried it off with a towel and tried to test all the openings. I found that my earphones worked and that it was capable of being charged, but no sound would come out of the speaker because the phone was “connected to headphones” even without my headphones actually being in. In addition to that, siri couldn’t not understand or make sense of anything I was saying to her which leads me to believe my microphone doesn’t work either, but other than that everything was perfectly fine. I currently have my phone turned all the way off and sitting on the counter, I am planning on not turning it on until tomorrow morning. Any suggestions?

I had a NÜÜD case on mines when water was injected inside the case by one of their faulty cases. I think they should pay for my replacement, but all they did was send me a new case. it doesn’t help with no phone to use for the case!! I tried to get the water out ASAP! but it didn’t help. I couldn’t touch the screen because it wouldn’t move. a few days later it did a few colors and shut off completely. I’m not sure what happened but NÜÜD should replace my phone:|

Dropped my iphone 6 in the sink. Grabbed it immediately and dried it off. Took it apart and there really wasn’t even any water in there but I turned it off for 2 days. Put it back together and tired to turn it on. The screen lights up with the white APPLE then goes off. The screen has a hit of blue tint when charging but the phone will not come on. Every once in a while the APPLE will pop up for a second and then gone. Is there any components inside that I can change out to try and troubleshoot where the problem is without having to replace the whole phone? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

I have the iPhone 6. Had the phone for 2+ years now, the FIRST TIME that it has been contacted with water was when I was showering last year. I left it on the edge of the tub where the shower was running down like it’s drizzling on it. When it got wet, I immediately turned it off & wiped everywhere trying to get as much water out as I can. I removed the sim & did the rice method & turning brightness all the way method. After leaving it in rice for a couple of days, I turned it back on… I see water damage & water stains so that’s when I turned the brightness up so that the water stains can be evaporated. After doing that for a week, the stains disappeared and the phone works perfectly. Now THIS YEAR yesterday July 26, 2016 I dropped my phone in the toilet at the movies about 5+ secs & immediately took it out, removed case, SIM card & wiped as much water out. My boyfriend ended up shaking it to get more out and blowing in the ports. I put it in rice when I got home & left it off the whole night till today the 27th of July. Today I just took it out of the rice to use a cool air dryer to blow in the ports gently to at least help the drying process dry faster. Then I put it back in the rice bag to dry again… I haven’t turned it on yet so I’ll be waiting for another day or two before trying to turn it on. I PRAY AND HOPE MY PHONE WILL BE OKAY AGAIN.

Hi guys – any help would be gratefully received!! I dropped my I phone 6 in the toilet last Friday(clean water thankfully), when I fished it out – it was still powered up, but seconds later it died! I immediately took the sim out and put the phone in a bag of rice.
Its now Wednesday, and still no sign of life :-( …I’ve tried powering it up, and charging it through the MacBook, but still nothing.
I don’t have warranty with Apple, and its only a year old – Another 12 months left to run on my contract!!
Any hints or tips hugely thankful :-)

just remove the screen, and of the back side of the screen on the top there is a speaker, remove these tree screws and take the speaker out, dry it with hair dryer, and wipe the connections and the hole where the speakergoes with dry paper. this did the trick for me!

I took my phone with me to a creek and slipped into the water, part of my iphone submerged for a few seconds. I took it out, it was still working, but no sound, charging slow. Later, the sound was just fine, but it wasn’t charging. It still won’t charge. Says that the cable isn’t suitable for the iphone. I know that it’s the port though that was damaged, because that’s the part of my phone that was submerged. I will probably have to get it fixed at the store today, but if there’s any tips on how to fix it, I’m game. Thanks :)

My iPhone got wet after lying in my jacket(Rain). At first it wast just the touch that didn´t work, but I managed to turn it off. After 24 h in gel, it won´t turn on. What part of the phone is most likely damage?

Most iphones will brick when you drop them in the toilet, I suspect it’s caused by the cistern update.

I would not recommend using rice.

This is how I fixed my drowned iPhone 5. I immediately turned the phone off, I then dried the outer casing, opened the phone up (removed screws in bottom by gently loosening them with the corner of a sharp Stanley knife, and then use the Stanley to pry the screen off by sliding it in just above the headphone port.) Then I put the phone inside my gaming PC with the screen propped open to allow for airflow inside the phone (being careful not to damage the ribbon cables).

I figured as my gaming PC is full of fans and passes ~100 litres of air per minute, coupled with the fact its very warm inside, it would be an ideal drying chamber.

It worked perfectly, 5 hours later the phone is working as new and even the moisture inside the screen and the fog inside the camera lens has completely evaporated.

The faster you do this the more chance of survival you will have, as the water will corrode the PCB’s very quickly.

So my advice, open the phone up and put it somewhere with a good airflow around it, such as inside your PC. I would hazard a guess it works much better than putting your phone in rice or silica gel as it only took 5 hours to completely dry.

I wanted to share my recent experience with water damage of my iPhone 6s. I briefly dropped my phone in water 8 days ago, today it has returned to (from what I can tell so far) full functionality. Unfortunately I’ve already gone through the process of an insurance claim and getting and setting up a new phone, but I wanted to share my story so that others realize that with a little more patience than I had, you can save your phone.

I first damaged it 7 nights ago at a friends house. I didn’t know to turn it off, but removed the cover and got it as dry as I could… at this point it was still functional. Then a few minutes later the screen went blank and I thought it had fried the circuits. Given the cost of a new phone though, I was determined to save it if possible. I got home and immediately wrapped it in a tissue and put it in a tupperware container of rice, standing up to point ports downward. Later that day I was also able to obtain some silica gel packets, which I stuck in with the phone and the rice. At the recommendation of a friend who’s an electrical engineer, I also placed the container in my car to help the drying process.

I left it in the car from Friday Morning till the following Monday, at which time I removed it and started it up. IT CAME ON!! I was SO excited… but then I realized that my touch screen wasn’t working and at this point I assumed that all was lost and began my insurance claim to get my new phone on the way because if you can’t unlock it then you’re S.O.L.

So I get my new phone mid week and go about getting it all set up, etc… It is now day 8 after the original water damage took place. I am wandering about the house, go to pick up my phone to call my husband, and after unlocking it realize that I have just unlocked my OLD phone… after 8 days the touchscreen came back to life and the phone appears to be fully functional now. Morale of the story, wait it out if you can….it may just be a matter of time… Patience grasshopper :)
