Moto G Android 5.1 Lollipop Update Released

Published

on

In October when Google announced the brand new Android 5.0 Lollipop update many manufacturers promised quick updates, and that included Motorola. Google’s been busy pushing updates to Nexus users, as well as a new Android 5.0.2 and Android 5.1 update to fix some bugs, and today we’ve learned the Moto G is getting Android 5.1 Lollipop for some.

Since the October announcement we’ve seen Motorola quickly updated many key devices to Android 5.0 Lollipop, and even the Moto X Pure edition received Android 5.1 Lollipop already. However, the latest release hasn’t arrived for any others, but now the Google Play Edition Moto G is getting Android 5.1 Lollipop as of yesterday.

Motorola has been busy pushing out updates, and that includes the Moto G and Moto X around the globe and for some carriers here in the United States. The original Moto G (2013) model received it in India and a few other regions, but not stateside. The problem is Android 5.0.1 then Android 5.0.2 were both released to fix bugs, making Motorola start over on updates, and now it’s clear they’re working on Android 5.1 updates for all devices.

If you happen to own a device from Motorola that isn’t the Moto G, the link above has more details, as the company released plenty of details surrounding the update. Not to mention a new updates webpage dedicated to tracking software updates for all of its devices.

The update rolling out today is sadly only for the Moto G Google Play Edition, and will take it straight from Android 5.0.1 Lollipop which it received a while ago, and jump users straight to Android 5.1 Lollipop instead. This is a welcomed update that will fix many issues owners have been having, but we’re also hearing an Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update could be release soon as well.

Android 5.1 Lollipop adds a few noteworthy new features to stop Lollipop, not to mention fixes a slew of bugs with the initial release. Users can expect some tweaks to the dialer, an improved notification pulldown bar with easier to use quick settings. The do not disturb and silent mode has been tweaked with more options, and more. All the new bits can be found from the link above.

Those with the Google Play Edition Moto G started getting the over the air update to Android 5.1 Lollipop late last night, and it should continue to rollout to all owners over the course of the next few weeks. Google does slow and staggered rollouts, to make sure there are no issues as the update gets delivered, so not everyone will get it on the same day. Sadly there’s no way around this, so users will simply need to wait for its arrival.

If you own the Moto G GPe head into settings > about phone > and check for updates manually, as it may be ready and waiting for owners to download and install. So far we’ve had rather positive results from the Android 5.1 update, much better than Android 5.0 which had a few bugs, so we’d recommend all owners accept and install Android 5.1 once it arrives.

Again, the update is rolling out as of this week, but in phases. You should get it as of yesterday, or over the course of the next week or so. Stay tuned and drop a comment below if you’ve received the update, and if you’re experiencing any issues.
