3 Things to Know About Google’s Alphabet Split
Today one of the most influential internet companies in history split in two. Alphabet is the new parent company in which Google will reside under. Moments ago Google’s former co-founder and CEO, Larry Page, along with President Sergey Brin announced a brand new company, and the split of Google Inc. Here’s a few things to know for those interested.
For years Google has continued to get bigger and bigger, into the powerhouse giant company we all know and love today. Offering everything from Google Search, Gmail, the Chrome Browser, Android, and so many small projects it’s hard to keep track of everything they’re doing these days. But that all just changed.
Through the official Google Blog and on social media, this afternoon Larry Page confirmed that himself, along with Sergey Brin, have split Google in two and started a brand new company called Alphabet. It’s all a bit confusing, and below are a few more details regarding what’s going on, the future of Google, Android and more.
First things first, Google is still here, and the new CEO is former Android and Google Chrome lead Sundar Pichai. Someone who’s done amazing things with the company for years, and received very high praises this afternoon by Larry Page. It’s all a bit confusing and was just announced moments ago.
Alphabet
Alphabet is the brand new parent company of Google, and all the other Google-type companies operating today under one huge umbrella. Google, along with several other small businesses, ventures, projects and more that were all crammed under one roof as Google will now be split, allowing for each to focus their needs and hone in on what’s truly important.
Many of the things Google’s done in the recent past have been very extreme. Things in the health sector, Google Glass as a prime example, and many other small projects. All of these will now be under Alphabet, as is Google. However, this allows Google and Android (hopefully) to operate as one, with a cleaner, more focused vision moving forward.
In the blog post released moments ago Larry explained that Google Ventures, YouTube, Google Life Sciences, Calico, and things like Google X Labs (which brought us Google Glass) and more will all be a part of Alphabet, instead of Google. Here’s a small quote from the announcement.
“What is Alphabet? Alphabet is mostly a collection of companies. The largest of which, of course, is Google. This newer Google is a bit slimmed down, with the companies that are pretty far afield of our main Internet products contained in Alphabet instead. What do we mean by far afield? Good examples are our health efforts: Life Sciences (that works on the glucose-sensing contact lens), and Calico (focused on longevity). Fundamentally, we believe this allows us more management scale, as we can run things independently that aren’t very related. Alphabet”
Basically what this all means is that Google was getting a bit bloated. Too many different projects all going a hundred different directions, not to mention Google as a whole was getting too big, or “powerful” some might say.
As a result, they’ve now all been split. Google is one big piece and company all under the huge Alphabet umbrella moving forward.
As we said above, everything is still very confusing as this news has just arrived moments ago. There was absolutely zero mention of Google’s core, aside from search, and no mention of Chrome, and more importantly, Android. However, most likely Android will continue to operate under Google and Sundar Pichai, which will allow a lot more focus to be put into Google and Android itself. Rather than branching out into so many different areas.
Former Google founders and CEO Larry Page and Sergey Brin are now in charge of Alphabet, and that leaves Google in need of a CEO. The new head of Google is Sundar Pichai, who since taking over has done amazing things with Android.
From what it sounds like, Google as a new company will still be handling everything it does now. That being the internet, ads, Android, Chrome and so on. This move essentially allows for the more “out there” projects to stay out of the way, and keep the important things in focus, maturing, and improving the lifes of people around the globe.
Android & More
As we said above, the announcement today made no mention of Android. That can be a bit scary, but most likely Google and Sundar will likely stay in charge. That said, Larry specifically mentioned that moving forward each small company under Alphabet will have its own CEO. However, this does mean that Google and Android will get more of the attention it needs as of late, rather than trying to juggle everything all under one huge company. This should lead to a better Google, a better Android, and better companies all around under Alphabet.
The big question though, will this allow for Android to get quicker software updates?
Every company under the Alphabet umbrella will have its own crew and CEO, and in Google’s case, that’s Sundar. All the smaller companies will also have new powerful and capable CEO’s which will likely come in further announcements over the course of the next week.
In closing, what this all means is that Alphabet is basically the new Google. A huge company that essentially rules the internet world. Google is still Google, it’s just one of many under Larry and Sergey’s new company. This will also allow two of Google’s original founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin to focus on more extreme projects. Things like Google Glass from the Project X Labs, Drone delivery efforts, Wing, and many other crazy adventures and projects. Expect more details and announcements to arrive shortly.
