There is a completely legit way to get an iPhone 6s for free thanks to an Apple Pay promotion. But in order to get an iPhone 6s for free, you’ll need to bet a big spender and get in the habit of using Apple Pay.
Discover Card is encouraging its customers to start using Apple Pay by offering up to $1,000 in cash-back bonuses through the end of the year. That’s enough to buy any iPhone 6s model outright.
Discover is the last of the four major credit card issuers to add Apple Pay support. Apple Pay is built-in to all Apple Watch, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s models. It looks like this 10% Cashback promo to quickly gain some traction since it’s late to the Apple Pay party.
In order to get more people to use Apple Pay, banks and credit card issuers have run various promotions, but Discover’s is the most aggressive we’ve seen to date. From now until the end of the year, Discover is offering a 10% Cashback Bonus on all purchases made with Apple Pay, up to a maximum of $10,000. That means iPhone owners that also have a Discover card can earn up to a $1,000 in credits.
Apple Pay launched as an iPhone 6 feature last year, but many users haven’t bothered to start using their iPhones as wallets. While Apple’s roster of participating Apple Pay vendors is growing, it still isn’t possible for most consumers to leave their wallets behind and rely solely on Apple Pay when shopping.
So how could you go about getting a free iPhone 6s with this deal? By spending a lot more than the full price of an iPhone 6s between now and the end of the year. The iPhone 6s starts at $649, which means you would need to spend at least $6,490 to get enough Cashback bonus credits to cover its pre-tax cost. You would need to spend all of that money at retail locations with Apple Pay terminals.
Since you only have a little over three months until the end of the year, that means spending a little over $2,000 with Apple Pay, which is a lot more money than a lot of people spend per month period. At the same time, there are quite a few people that spend $2,000 per month at retail locations per month, especially during the fourth quarter of the year.
If you use Apple Pay to actually buy the iPhone 6s at an Apple Store you will cover 10% of your new phone’s cost immediately. You can also put a big dent in the $6,490 spending goal if you’re due for a new Mac or other big-ticket items at the Apple store.
If you can’t spend that much money with a Discover card and Apple Pay, you can at least cover part of the new iPhone’s cost by buying ingredients for your holiday dinners at Whole Foods.
Several retailers that are popular with holiday shoppers accept Apple Pay. Bloomingdales, Macy’s, GameStop, Nike and Sephora are just a few examples. Those with Discover business cards can rack up their Cashback bonuses at Office Depot and OfficeMax.
Discover’s Cashback promotion requires iPhone users to upgrade their iPhones to iOS 9.
