The new iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are still water-resistant. So is the new iPhone X, which means any of the new 2017 iPhones you buy will survive brief exposure to water. The only new iPhone you buy this year that isn't water resistant is the iPhone SE. 

Apple changed the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus to include a new glass back, which is also part of the all new iPhone X design. With the new looks and stainless steel band that runs around the edge, you still get a water-resistant design. 

This is an IP67 resistance, which means you can expose it to about three feet of water for 30 minutes. This isn't designed to go swimming with or take underwater selfies. It's designed to protect your iPhone from damage if you drop it into a puddle, pool, sink or other body of water.
