The wasteland is a dangerous place and you'll want to make sure that your companion is protected with high quality gear. To get Dogmeat or another companion outfitted with better gear, you'll want to open up a transfer window and pass along items like Power Armor or a dog collar. If the gear is compatible with your companion, you'll be able to equip it. If you're using a human character, it would be wise to outfit that person with Power Armor if and when you're heading into a massive firefight. If you're using Dogmeat, slap on some dog armor, a dog helmet or some aviation googles. This guide will show you how to find some high quality armor for Dogmeat early in the game. Your companions won't die but they will require stimpaks if they take a ton of damage. If you don't want to waste stimpacks on your companions, make sure you give them some gear.
