Oppo Posts Image Samples Taken With New Sony Exmor Camera Sensor on Oppo Find 5 Phablet

One of the cool things about Oppo’s new Find 5 phablet is that the device will be among the first to use Sony’s forthcoming 13-megapixel Exmor camera sensor. The sensor will likely also make its way to new Sony-branded Xperia smartphones and/or tablets in 2013 as well. Oppo had gone on to take and post some sample images showing what the new Exmor RS camera sensor is capable of, and from early glimpses, the sensor delivers some impressive results with color pop and the ability to retain details.

Reportedly, the new Exmor RS sensor will also enable HDR video recording as well. The Xperia Blog had re-posted some images that were captured with Sony’s imaging sensor on the Find 5, which are posted below:

The sensor was supposed to have been available earlier, but Sony made a last minute decision to delay the launch of the camera sensor to fine tune it. The sensor was at one point rumored to have been included on Samsung’s Galaxy Note II phablet, but instead that device launched with the same 8-megapixel sensor as the Galaxy S III flagship smartphone.

The Exmor RS sensor uses an 8-megapixel/13-megapixel stacked CMOS architecture, which results in a smaller chip package. Additionally, the sensors were at one point said to include RGBW coding to allow cleaner images to be captured in low light situations, but the feature was removed.

Hopefully, once the Oppo Find 5 starts shipping in early 2013, we’ll learn more about how the sensor behaves and hopefully Sony can scale up production so it can arrive in more phones. Sony has been doing an amazing job with imaging sensor for standalone cameras, and it looks like Sony is extending this leadership to sensors for mobile imaging.

The Find 5 will also be arriving in the U.S. with its 1080p display, quad-core processor, and top quality image sensor for just under $500.
